Just Add Watson: Episode 1 - transforming the apparel industry with AI

02:43
Shimmy Technologies is a Brooklyn, New York-based startup focused on helping the apparel industry embrace automation and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to make workflows more efficient, lower manufacturing costs, and meet the increasing demand for custom clothing in the market. Sarah Krasley, the CEO and creative force behind Shimmy Technologies, has a background in industrial design and experience in helping automotive designers look at a car’s shape and form using simulation technology. The inspiration for her startup comes from working with automotive designers and watching them sculpt the hood of a car; what if we could take the same principles and apply it to designing for the human body while balancing the visual aspects of design to produce custom apparel. Sarah chose to begin by focusing on swimwear because creating a perfect fit provided the greatest challenge. Sarah and her startup Shimmy Technologies were able to leverage IBM Cloud technology credits provided by the IBM Global Entrepreneur program to help bring her innovative solution to market faster. Artificial Intelligence Applications: 13 Areas AI Will Change Fashion Industry [CRITICAL]

12:31
Artificial Intelligence, is here to stay and is affecting all the major industries This tutorial walks you thru 13 areas where artificial intelligence is and could affect retail, beauty, clothing and fashion industry. 1. Supply Chain & Demand Projection: H&M announced that they were sitting on $4.3B of inventory, that is a lot of money that is sitting and being wasted. AI Solution: Using AI, it can use prediction analysis that which type of clothes, might not sell and create a combination of discounts, free shipping, product combo’s etc. to clear out the inventory that is most likely not to sell after a certain time period. Rue La La collaborated with MIT to experiment with AI technologies to improve demand forecasting. They developed a system that helped them predict the demand for products in their flash sales and accounted for data sources including brand information, product type, color, price and a range of other factors. This enabled them to optimize prices and generate a 10 percent increase in revenue without the extra burden of unused inventory or supplier costs.4 German e-commerce player Otto uses deep learning to analyze billions of transactions and is 90 percent accurate in forecasting what it will sell in the next 30 days. This insight allows it to order a couple of hundred thousand items each month from vendors with no human intervention. It has also cut surplus stock by 20 percent and reduced costly returns by 2 million items each year. 2. Photos for a new collection When you create new clothing line or launch a new collection, you have to take photos of all items to be posted on your website. It can be extremely cost sensitive because it involves models, photographers, makeup artists etc and you have ot manage their schedules and re-shoots can be a pain in the ass. There are AI companies that are enabling retailers to shoot images by putting clothes on mannequins and then replacing the mannequin with the 3D Image of the actual model. They did 3.GAP: Sorting Orders at Warehouse When you order a product on GAP or Amazon or any other online retailer, there are actual people on the other side picking and sorting products for you. It is a huge cost for because retailers have to pay them, it takes a longer time to sort products and most warehouses can’t function 24/7. AI Solution: GAP is testing and working with Kindered AI to train robots to pick and sort its products. * Imagine: Robots pick items of different sizes, puts them together in a nice box and drone brings it to your door. 4. Inventory Checks and Re-stocking Problem: today human beings go visit the racks and check if items need to be restocked. AI Solution: Camera’s and sensors can automagically sense what is missing and needs to be restocked and can pre-order it for you. And they can pair the understanding of the seasons, sales data etc to make sure they only order the item that is more likely to sell. And instead of getting new items manufactured, they can check if that item or similar item exists at other locations but its probability of selling at that location is low it, it can order it from there or ship it to the customer from there. 5. AI Designing Clothes Amazon is developing AI that combines hundreds of thousands of designs, fabrics etc to create something new that it interprets that could sell. Myntra’s brand Moda Rapido is powered by AI and works without human intervention to offer computer-generated designs, including T-shirts, jeans, kurtas, and shoes. The system is fed data from various sources, including customer data, social media, fashion publications etc., and creates thousands of combinations of designs, then hones in on what would sell well. It now has the highest gross margins compared to all other 14 brands under the Myntra portfolio. 6. Trend Forecasting Trend forecasting is big business. There are companies such as WGSN does that. They have employees that go thru thousands of images, look for patterns, new trends and sort them out to do trend forecast. AI: Analyzing which images, colors, style of photos that didn’t exist before but are getting high engagement. Combine that with data from hashtags, location, influencer, color distribution etc. AI can help analyze & predict upcoming trends.

I’ve been able to make a healthy living doing work I love in fashion. But I got started just like you, one step at a time. It began with some embarrassing hand sewn dresses and fashion sketches that would make a 3-year-old’s artwork look like a masterpiece. Then, things changed. I learned how design was done on a large scale. I learned how to get things into production. And I learned all the skills I wish I knew when I was first starting out. Top 14 Fashion Designer Interview Questions and Answers

Fashion designers create original clothing, accessories, and footwear. They sketch designs, select fabrics and patterns, and give instructions on how to make the products they designed. Duties Fashion designers typically do the following: Study fashion trends and anticipate designs that will appeal to consumers Decide on a theme for a collection Use computer-aided design programs (CAD) to create designs Visit manufacturers or trade shows to get fabric samples Select fabrics, embellishments, colors, or style for each garment or accessory Work with other designers or team members to create a prototype design Present design ideas to the creative director or showcase them in fashion or trade shows Market designs to clothing retailers or directly to consumers Oversee the final production of their designs Larger apparel companies typically employ a team of designers headed by a creative designer. Some fashion designers specialize in clothing, footwear, or accessory design, but others create designs in all three fashion categories. For some fashion designers, the first step in creating a new design is researching current fashion and making predictions of future trends, using trend reports published by fashion industry trade groups. Other fashion designers create collections from inspirations they get from their regular surroundings, from the cultures they have experienced and places they have visited, or from various art media that inspire them. After they have an initial idea, fashion designers try out various fabrics and produce a prototype, often with less expensive material than will be used in the final product. They work with models to see how the design will look and adjust the designs as needed. Although most designers first sketch their designs by hand, many now also sketch their ideas digitally with computer-aided design (CAD) programs. CAD allows designers to see their work on virtual models. They can try out different colors, design, and shapes while making adjustments more easily than they can when working with real fabric on real people. The designers produce samples with the actual materials that will be used in manufacturing. Samples that get good responses from editors or trade and fashion shows are then manufactured and sold to consumers. Although the design process may vary by specialty, in general it takes 6 months from initial design concept to final production, when either the spring or fall collection is released. Some companies may release new designs as frequently as every month, in addition to releases during the spring and fall. The Internet and e-commerce allow fashion designers to offer their products outside of the traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Instead they can ship directly to the consumer, without having to invest in a physical shop to showcase their products lines. The following are examples of types of fashion designers: Clothing designers create and help produce men's, women's, and children's apparel, including casual wear, suits, sportswear, evening wear, outerwear, maternity, and intimate apparel. Footwear designers create and help produce different styles of shoes and boots. As new materials become available, such as lightweight synthetic materials used in shoe soles, footwear designers produce new designs that combine comfort, form, and function. Accessory designers design and produce items such as handbags, suitcases, belts, scarves, hats, hosiery, and eyewear. Costume designers design costumes for the performing arts and for motion picture and television productions. They research the styles worn during the period in which the performance takes place, or they work with directors to select and create appropriate attire. They also must stay within the costume budget for the particular production.

How To Make A T-Shirt From Design To Manufacturing Process

11:12
In this video I show you how to make a t-shirt from the design to manufacturing process. It starts with designing a shirt, pattern making, sewing, cutting and then goes into large production manufacturing. More from Bella Canvas: http://bit.ly/2t9Guo6 When starting a clothing line it's important to know the process, and this video is a great way to learn what it takes to create a t-shirt from scratch. Sign up to the newsletter and receive free downloads to help grow your business + enter to win upcoming giveaways: http://bit.ly/Apparel-Download The following steps can be applied to make any product, so feel free to jot down notes and reference this section for future use. Step 1: T-Shirt Design The first step to making a t-shirt involves the design sketch. Create a sketch that depicts the angles and details you'd like the final shirt to have. It doesn't have to be super fancy, as long as you can show what you need. Designing a shirt with the end goal in mind helps the pattern maker know what you are going for. Thanks you Torey Lewitz for joining us. Step 2: Pattern Making Once the designs are completed, you will consult with a pattern maker to bring your clothing line to life. The pattern maker will take your designs and create “patterns” which are the pieces that will be cut and sewn together. Step 3: Sample Cutting Once the patterns are completed, they are printing on a plotter that creates the outline for the sample cutter. The person in charge of cutting the sample will follow the guides to ensure the pieces are cut to the right specifications. Castle Notches allow the person in charge of sewing to close the product up right. Step 4: Sewing The T-Shirt After the fabric is cut out, it is ready to be sewn. The cut pieces are now the shape of the patterns and multiple sewing machines are used to finish the design. The final outcome is hopefully what you envisioned. But more than likely it won’t be the final fit, so you will repeat the process until you are happy with the size, fit and shape of your apparel line. Step 5: Mass Production Cutting As soon as the shirt or apparel design you created is approved, the patterns are finalized and sent into the production process. John Chacon Head Of Production walks us through his process. Step 6: Mass Production Sewing Once the pieces are all cut out, they are sent to the sewing factory. The factory is given the cut fabric and the head of production is in charge of making sure everyone knows what their role is. Step 7: Order Fulfillment/ Clothing Line Distribution The last step in this video is the order fulfillment and distribution of the finished clothing. As a clothing business you also have to think about how you will provide quicker shipping, handle returns and manage employees. Randy Pinter Head of Warehouse Distribution drops the knowledge on what it takes to run this facility. Designing for the Augmented Body: Fashion and Wearable Technology | Amanda Parkes | TEDxFultonStreet

10:54
Amanda takes us on a whirlwind journey through some of the latest advances and projects in Wearable Computing. The newest companies are rethinking the very nature of technology. For instance, instead of sewing a battery into a garment, they're making garments that can generate their own power. New technology looks more like fashionable jewelry than like a computer. Dr. Amanda Parkes is a fashion and wearable technology expert, the Chief of Technology and Research at Manufacture NY, a fashion incubator/factory/research facility. She holds a PhD from the MIT Media Lab and is a member of the Business of Fashion 500 People Shaping the Global Fashion Industry. As a biomedia designer and fashion technologist, Amanda Parkes stands at the intersection of new media, textiles, and fashion. After completing her BA in art history and BS in mechanical engineering (product design) at Stanford, Parkes dedicated her career to discovering new ways that digital technology and ‘smart materials’ affect everyday lives. Her Twitter handle describes her as “one part algae, one part fashion, a dash of robots and a smattering of installation art.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
