Whatever you call them, lettering, typography, typefaces, they can make a dramatic difference to the impact of your brand identity. And you don't need to know a lot to start to make that change. We will learn today, small pieces how you can show your emotions, vibe and values with the right fonts. Font types and what you need to know about them. Serif fonts add a touch of elegance and traditionalism to a brand identity. The serifs are the bits at the end of each letter. Serifs can give your brand a look from past, but when combined with colours and styling they can also be ultra modern and elegant. Because of traditional look they are great for classic projects and print. Sans serif fonts are by their very nature, modern and contemporary. Thy add a streamlined, clean and forward thinking touch to your identity. Script fonts bring personality and character to your brand identity. And from retro cool to elegant calligraphy there is a script font for every business. Display fonts are fun to use and will certainly give your identity a very on-treand feel. Use as accent fonts rather than within your logo. If you have nice handwriting there are ways of turning it to font as nothing can be more personal as your own handwriting. There are handful of fonts that have a bad reputation, they have been overused and misused. Choosing a great set of fonts will get you a long way, but how you use the type also matters. Want to create a feminine brand identity, but without pink or script fonts? It's totally possible! You can have a feminine brand without the obvious design choices that so many people use. At the end of the day though, your brand can be feminine because of the pictures you choose and the way you talk. It's not just about your brand fonts and brand color choices. Those things definitely can help, but it's not the ONLY solution. To create a feminine brand, use rounder edged fonts, pastel colors, or even bold colors. --- ► Make sure to subscribe for future videos! ► website: http://www.jesscreatives.com ► facebook: http://facebook.com/jesscreativesdesign ► instagram: http://instagram.com/jesscreatives --- Videos edited by: http://www.easypeasystudio.com Music: http://www.purple-planet.com

Futura is familiar. But its journey from avant-garde German type to hipster favorite is unusual — and it includes Nazis and the moon. Futura was created by Paul Renner in 1920s Germany, just as the Bauhaus movement was picking up steam. Though Renner wasn't Bauhaus, Futura had that flavor, which was part of the problem. The newly powerful Nazis favored the ornate Fraktur type style to modern Futura, so they excluded both the type and its creator. Of course, Nazis are not just evil, but also often insane and inefficient — so Futura returned to Germany, as did Renner. But by that time, Futura had established itself as the international typeface of the future, and the font's legacy was secured. That's even more clear when you learn about the lunar plaque that went up on Apollo 11. Futura was the font selected for that great task — making Futura the font that escaped the Nazis and landed on the moon.

Free Download on How to Start Your Business: http://www.giftbizunwrapped.com/12steps Episode 189 – Sal Frances is a branding and social media content specialist. Wait, let me back that up. Sal is mybranding and social media content specialist. I’ve told her before that I want to keep her all to myself, but that’s not nice. Nor does that serve you at all. Plus, you have asked for direction in this area so I’m bringing you the best. Sal doesn’t call herself a graphic designer though, because branding is so much more! She escaped the corporate world in 2017 with the intention to sell digital products (ebooks and courses.) Sal never thought she’d be designing brands and social media graphics for clients. This came about completely unintentionally simply by sharing her work within her coaching group. To her surprise, everyone said, “I want that. Can you do this for me?” Sal found her place in the social media space organically by learning what she’s best at AND what people need. Today, Sal has a content “batching” service and does custom brand work for clients, which is what she’s doing for me. In fact, she’s the genius behind the branding of my signature program, Makers MBA as well as most of what you see online with Gift Biz Unwrapped. Business Building Insights • Branding is more than a logo. It encompasses the words you use, the colors, the fonts, the imagery and the photography. • It’s not about what people see. It’s what they think, feel and remember about your brand. • Cohesive branding is important throughout your business. Avoid the feeling of disconnect. • Rather than asking, “What do I want my audience to see?” You want to ask, “How do I want my audience to feel?” “What do I want my audience to think?” “What do I want my audience to remember?” • Identify 5 words that describe your brand’s personality. • List all the brand touch points where your brand is visible. Graphic Design Tutorial: 10 Typography rules to help you improve your type skills. Get better at graphic design by understanding how to use type. Improve your layouts instantly by following these 10 easy to follow rules. How can you quickly apply typographic rules to regain control of your layouts by following these 10 golden rules of typography? These rules are distilled down from the things that I learned by going to Art Center College of Design. Generally speaking, there are two types of typography– expressive typography (type is visual, carries the meaning of the word and sometimes appears as physical shapes) and functional typography (type that is meant to be read). I will focus on the latter. When starting out, it is best to learn the fundamentals of good design: hierarchy (primary, secondary and tierchiary reads), flow (how a person “reads” the layout by following the movement of their attention), legibility (in Western culture, type is read top to bottom, left to right so it’s important to arrange type accordingly), grouping (organizing blocks of type in intelligent and logical groups) and interest, achieved through contrast (scale, texture, color, density, negative space). Use any typeface you like as long as it’s one of the following: Akzidenz Grotesque, Avenir, Avant Garde, Bell Gothic, Bodoni, Bembo, Caslon, Clarendon, Courier, Din Mittelschrift, Franklin Gothic, Frutiger, Futura, Garamond, Gill Sans, Gotham, Helvetica, Letter Gothic, Memphis, Meta, OCRB, Rockwell, Sabon, Trade Gothic, Trajan and Univers. _________________________________________________________________ Great books to learn more about typography: Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works by Erik Spiekermann http://amzn.to/2iNXwC8 Josef Müller Brockmann Pioneer of Swiss Graphic Design http://amzn.to/2k7o5Yb Typography Manual @2017 Chris Do https://blind.com/blog/typography-manual/ _________________________________________________________________ Animation by: Leo Dinh Red Cat Motion http://redcatmotion.com Music and sound design by: Adam Sanborne http://adamsanborne.com _ Listen to our podcast on iTunes: The Futur https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-futur/id1152604340?mt=2 Android Stitcher http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/aaron/the-futur HOW TO SUPPORT THE FUTUR: Purchase a Kit: http://theskool.co/collections/all or subscribe to the secret and private Master mind group on Facebook with exclusive videos not released anywhere else. This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Sarah shares with us a story of type and invites us to consider our emotional response to the printed word. Each font/typeface has a personality that influences our interpretation of the words we read by evoking our emotions and setting the scene. We all understand this instinctively but it happens on a subconscious level. Sarah shows us that conscious awareness of the emotional life of fonts can be entertaining and ultimately give us more control over the decisions we make. Designer Sarah Hyndman explores typography as we experience it in our every day lives under the banner of Type Tasting. Since the launch in 2013 she’s curated an exhibition at the V&A for the London Design Festival, been interviewed on Radio 4’s Today, taken Type Tasting to South by Southwest in Austin, Texas and has been commissioned to write a book. Sarah has been a graphic designer for over 15 years, working in agencies before setting up design company With Relish. After studying an MA in Typo/Graphics at the London College of Communication she was invited back as a guest tutor. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

http://kennyharper.rocks/fonts-matter-personal-brand-yes/ Choosing Fonts Congruent With Your Brand Message Fonts and typography, just like colors can communicate a lot about your brand. There are many different types of fonts, some are sophisticated and elegant, while others are bold or playful. Choosing fonts that clearly represent who you are, what you’re about, and the purpose you serve is important. You want to select your salt and collect your fonts with intent. You really want to establish your reason for choosing those particular fonts. Guidelines For Selecting Your Fonts You can select maybe two or three different brand fonts, one you may use only for specialty sort of graphics or specialty messaging, some you may use for headlines, and others you might use for body copy. There are serif fonts, sans-serif fonts, slab fonts, old fonts, minimalistic fonts, all types of different fonts. Now don’t go font crazy on me, some people, including myself at one point in time, think more is better and they want to choose a lot of different fonts, believing that they’re showing variety. By doing this they’re trying to appeal to a mass of different people and that’s not a good strategy. By trying to please everyone you typically please no one. You can tell who an amateur is by looking at a business card and seeing on it about 20 different font faces. It doesn’t communicate a clear message of who this person is, it’s mixed up. You don’t want to send out the message that you’re mixed up, you want to send out a message that you’re clear and know who you are. So choose your fonts wisely and then be consistent with using them. Consistency Is Key You’re going to use your fonts on your website, promotional collateral, on social media posts, etc. make sure to use your fonts consistently. When you are consistent in telling your story and letting people know who you are, they’re going to better understand it. You’re going to build trust and that’s how you start building deep and meaningful relationships. Take Action Take a look at the fonts that you’re using for your graphics and imagery, make sure you know what they are and that you’re using them consistently. If you have a team that works with you and helps create your marketing materials, make sure that they also know the fonts to use and have them available. Challenges You May Face There will be times when you’re using programs that may not have the fonts available, in this case try to find fonts that are as close to the chosen font as possible and if you can’t find any fonts that are similar, consider choosing a different font to use. In personal branding it’s about consistency. Don’t Forget Where The Term ‘Branding’ Came From Do you recall where the term branding came from? It began with farmers who were in the field fighting one another over whose cows belonged to whom. Then, someone had the brilliant idea of putting a mark on their cows in order to distinguish them from the other farmers’ cattle. Soon enough every farmer had their own mark, their own brand that they put on their livestock which carried over in their products. They didn’t go around changing their brand for different cows and their personalities, they kept the brand consistent.
The right font can elevate a brand’s status to high end and exclusive. The wrong font can make it feel cheap and undesirable (hello comic sans!). Variable Fonts show great promise for the future of typography, but have had few commercial applications. This is likely due to limited support in design programs, confusion about how the format can be used, and typical lag between the introduction of new technology and widespread adoption. Adidas has partnered with MCKL to create an innovative suite of variable fonts. These fonts are being used across a wide spectrum of applications, including Creative Direction, Product Design, Graphics, Communications, Digital Experiences, and the brand campaign for the upcoming World Cup. MCKL founder Jeremy Mickel will tell the story of his long collaboration with Adidas, which started in 2012 and includes the 2015 expansion of the Adineue PRO family. In 2017 they started the first Adidas Variable Font, Adineue CHOP variable: an octagonal “athletic” sans in a wide range of weights from hairline to black, and widths from extra-condensed to extra-wide. The next iteration of the project includes Adineue PRO variable, based on the geometric Adidas brand font. This talk will include discussion of the design process behind collaborating with Adidas, the production headaches and surprises associated with new technology, and the final payoff of seeing the fonts used in exciting ways. Note: This video and indeed all of the videos shot on the first day of the 2018 ATypI conference suffered from a wide range of technical problems with the audio capture and picture quality. We made technical efforts to improve the videos, hence their delayed upload.
