46:12
#198: Digital Transformation and the CIO Business expectations of the Chief Information Officer role have changed dramatically, forcing CIOs to adapt and evolve. This episode explores what's happening with CIOs and offers practical advice to both the business side and to CIOs themselves. Our guest is author Martha Heller, who is president of Heller Search Associates. Before she established her career in executive search, Martha was Founder and Managing Director of IDG's CIO Executive Council, a professional organization for CIOs. During her seven-year tenure at CIO magazine (IDG), Martha developed leadership programs for CIOs and directed the CIO Best Practice Exchange, a members-only network of IT leaders from top-tier organizations. Martha wrote a weekly column on IT leadership and led a series of executive events on IT staffing, career development, and leadership. Before CIO, Martha was an editor at Rutgers University Press. Martha continues to engage with CIO audiences every day. She is author of The CIO Paradox: Battling the Contradictions of IT Leadership, and Be the Business: CIOs in the New Era of IT. Martha writes CIO.com’s Movers & Shakers blog, and her e-newsletter, The Heller Report: You and Your CIO Career, is read by thousands of IT professionals every week. CIO Magazine: Resume Makeover & Success Story

02:29
http:--www.careerdefense.com http://www.linkedin.com/profile/edit?trk=nav_responsive_sub_nav_edit_profile 1-2 Today's episode is the story of 2 resumes. And it's the story of a candidate who has great career assets and great accomplishments -- as both a Consultant and a Chief Information Officer (CIO) -- but he was getting hardly any interest from recruiters and company managers. His resume was killing him. And I'm pleased to say I fixed the problem and now he's getting calls. 3 First, this is not a horrible resume. It's average -- your own resume might look like this. It's not good enough to get interviews among people outside his personal network. People who DO know him will give him interviews no matter how bad his resume. But for people like me who don't know him, he has no credibility. Point 1- No headline, no subheads -- NO direction. No idea who he is or what he does -- you've only got 6 seconds to pass the screening. So he's probably dead right here. Point 2 & 3- Nobody will read this paragragph because it's too dense. People will skip it. Same for the 14 bullets - too much text talking about all the wrong things. He's not talking about what recruiters and managers want to hear. Point 4 -- Finally he calls himself a consultant -- with no credibile details. Employers see this and think, "this is a fake job -- the guy hasn't worked since 2009." No way we're calling him in for an interview.   Points 5, 6, 7, and 8: Here you have 3 more pages of resume -- four in total -- and it's just blah, blah, blah. More of the same. Long and dense and boring. Reader is already lost on the first page, so none of this extra verbiage will help. If you read closely, you'll see that he's got some excellent material buried underneath all this . BUT NOBODY CAN SEE IT. And don't ever assume people will go looking to find good points about you. Only your mother will do that. Everybody else is just too busy and too there's much competition. -- Tim's new resume is getting the right kind of attention -- and interviews. His career path and top accomplishments are immediately visible. Fast and easy to read. And, first page can stand alone as a networking bio -- just save it as a separate PDF. Final page shows how to configure it for different uses. Point 12: You'll content is nearly 100% different as compared to original. I interviewed him for about 2 hours and drew out amazing new material that was missing on original http://www.careerdefense.com CIO Resume - Before and After Successful story - CIO Magazine success Story A talented CIO and IT Consultant - major awards and very successful career - was getting no interviews from people outside his network (recruiters & hiring managers). http://www.careerdefense.com Basic problem was that his CV buried his strongest points under unnecessary verbiage. Also, his strongest material was locked up inside his head - he did show the very details that recruiters and hiring managers are looking for.

3 Ways to Get Your First CIO Job

08:59
Breaking into the CIO or CTO ranks is highly competitive. So what really works? This video will cover the top 3 ways to get your first CIO job and the success rate for each method. The #1 reason that VPs, Directors, and Managers in technology never get to a CIO/CTO-level role has little to do with their qualifications or capabilities. Instead, their success really hinges on their message (how they communicate what they're all about in the resume, LinkedIn profile, etc.) and how they engage their audience (the "3 Ways" from this video). Breaking the CIO Paradox

10:00
Regardless of industry, most major companies are becoming technology companies. The successful management of information has become so critical to a company's goals, that in many ways, now is the age of the CIO. Yet IT executives are besieged by a host of contradictions: bad technology can bring a company to its knees, but corporate boards rarely employ CIOs; CIOs must keep costs down at the very same time that they drive innovation. CIOs are focused on the future, while they are tethered by technology decisions made in the past. These contradictions form what Martha Heller calls The CIO Paradox, a set of conflicting forces that are deeply embedded in governance, staffing, executive expectations, and even corporate culture. Based on in-depth interviews with a wide array of successful CIOs, more than 12 years working closely with the CIO community, Martha's presentation offers guidance to CIOs on how to attack, reverse, or neutralize the paradoxical elements of the CIO role, and level the playing field for IT's success. CM21: The First CIO and the speed of change w/ Charlie Feld

45:11
Recently I sat down with Charlie Feld, who is currently the founder and CEO of The Feld Group Institute but has had a career as long as there has been an IT industry and is considered the First CIO in corporate America. We cover a number of great topics during our conversation which I have broken out into two episodes. This episode, episode #21, of Custom Made, and next week's episode - episode #22. If you haven’t already subscribed to Custom Made, make sure you do to catch part two and all of our previous episodes. During his extraordinary 50-year career, Charlie has been committed to helping organizations and executives achieve IT-driven transformation. He has been frequently featured in the media, and has received numerous awards and accolades in recognition of his profound influence upon the IT industry, including the Smithsonian Award for Technology Excellence, the Carnegie Mellon Award for Innovative Technology, inducted into CIO magazine’s CIO Hall of Fame and the Tech Titans Hall of Fame Award, as well as Dallas CIO’s Leadership Award. Early in his career while he was as at Frito-Lay from 1981-1992 Charlie rose to the top of the IT function, where he became one of the first outstanding CIOs in corporate America. As Charlie overcame the early challenges of the post and developed a mature IT department, he found that he longed for the challenge of the early days once again. So he elected to found his own firm, The Feld Group, where he developed one of the first frameworks for IT organizations and provides temporary CIO services for large enterprise organizations like Southwest Airlines, Coca-Cola, The Home Depot, Delta, FedEx, EDS, and BNSF. You can find more information about Charlie at The Feld Group Institute, and in the two books Charlie has written, The Blind Spot: A Leader’s Guide to IT-Enabled Business Transformation and The Calloway Way: Results & Integrity - I’ll include links to all of these in the show notes at Dialexa.com On this weeks episode Charlie discusses his journey as the first CIO in corporate America, how the IT industry lacked a formal framework, and how IT needs to handle the speed of change for their organizations to be successful. Whilst many industries such as engineering, finance, sales, marketing, or manufacturing has existed for centuries, IT has only been part of a business for decades and still has a way to become a mature profession. Charlie shares how he has spent his career defining one of the first frameworks and a common language for the IT organization, and influencing the role of the CIO to change how IT can capitalize on the rate of change major organizations have to manage in order to be successful and avoid disruption. Charlie shares examples of where he has driven large transformation and modernization initiatives to stabilize enterprise organizations by addressing legacy IT operations and planning/building for change. From his time at Frito-Lay, Charlie shares three principles he learned from his conversations with founder Herman Lay: 1) Seek to understand a company in its simplest form 2) Nothing good ever happens in a warehouse 3) Look to the frontline people, and understand that are doing the work When discussing the speed of change, Charlie shares an experience that allowed him to try to better predict change. To be a good leader you need to be able to pull from all three of these perspectives: Experience - The core way people have learned for centuries Analytics - The ability to break down a problem Stepping-back - The ability to zoom-out recognize patterns Finally, Charlie discusses how we are only limited by our imagination when it comes to IT - which can be a challenge for some technology and engineering leaders. Technology today is almost limitless, and we have entered the Imagination Age. Be sure to tweet at me (https://twitter.com/dougplatts) and let me know what you think of the show.

With the right approach and partnerships, the role of the CIO shifts from a provider of IT services to that of a business strategist. US Navy: NAVFAC CIO on Information Technology at Scale (CXOTalk #260)

36:54
What is it like to be an assistant chief information officer (CIO) in the U.S. Navy? Anthony Joyce, information and business systems director for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), talks with CXOTalk about information technology at a very large scale, including issues, challenges, opportunities and digital transformation in IT. For more information, see https://www.cxotalk.com/episode/us-navy-it-transformation-scale Joyce’s 40 plus year career at NAVFAC includes the implementation of word processing and computer graphics systems, program management of Government-wide acquisition contracts, and information, project and portfolio management. As a deputy CIO, he and his team oversee portals and records management, the software portfolio and its testing and certifications, a portfolio of business systems that includes mainframe financial applications, a data center and the planning for cloud migration, the rigorous investment management certification process, and IT system preparations for financial audits. From the transcript: Michael Krigsman: (00:00:43) Yeah. Tony Joyce, how are you? Tell us about NAVFAC, and tell us about the Navy and your role. Anthony Joyce: (00:00:50) NAVFAC is probably best thought of when you look at all the buildings. The shore infrastructure is really the secret buzzword for what NAVFAC does: the buildings, of course the planning, land acquisition, and everything else associated with that; environmental activities on the shore, cleanup or remediation, ranges, and things like that are also part of our mission; the whole public works function for the buildings that the Navy owns. There are over, I think it is, 2 million acres and well over 100,000 buildings and structures of interest on the shore that we manage or support in various ways. Of course the construction of that over the last roughly 125 years has been handled by NAVFAC or its predecessor organization. We also are the parent organization for the CBs and, of course, they have a long and legendary history behind them. Dion Hinchcliffe: (00:02:00) NAVFAC, do you guys supply IT for all of those facilities and the CBs? Anthony Joyce: (00:02:09) We do have systems that support the utilities management, utilities metering, utilities monitoring, energy management, [and] some newer stuff that's associated with smart grids and things like that, so a lot of IoT in that infrastructure. [We] can't forget the buildings and the HVAC controls, some monitoring systems for environmental purposes, [and] various other things that are part of that industrial control environment that surrounds the building. Anthony Joyce: (00:04:52) The digital workplace that we use is the Navy's Navy Marine Corp. intranet, which is a very large network: approximately 0.5 million seats scattered across the United States, covering the Navy and Marine Corp. Approximately 100,000, I think, Marine Corp., so the majority, 3,000 to 4,000, are Navy seats. Of course, NAVFAC doesn't own that. The whole system is an outsourced contract. Rather, system is not the right term. It's a services contract that provides us with our desktops, and our desktops are fully managed under that construct, are secured, [and] are appropriately detailed. One of the things that one of my teams does in my organization is ensure that we have the desktop software that people need and ensure that it is adequately tested, secured, and suitable for use on the desktops within this environment. Michael Krigsman: (00:28:36) What are the key IT related, technology related challenges that you see coming down the pike? Anthony Joyce: (00:28:48) One of the challenges is certainly the data management and analytics, making that easier, making ad hoc querying effective. The whole arena of unstructured data and unstructured data management also is key because a large part of what we do and a lot of our data is captured inside contract documents or various reports, financial documents and such. Even in this day and age, the government exists largely off of paper. A large part of the auditing is to ensure that the business processes also have the key supporting documentation. As part of the independent audit team, they've been going out and looking for documentation about the building that may be 20-, 30-, or 40-years-old to determine that the air conditioning system was properly acquired and the building was properly constructed or things like this. (00:29:59) There is, I think, an awful lot of opportunity in finally getting data out of the paper, which I am still not too sure that I have seen too many successful technologies that do it because most of them require manual metadata collection. How do we automate that metadata? How do we discover the patterns between different types of documents? If I can pull the document out of the file, is that a maintenance manual? Is that a contract? Is that something else?

CIO Opportunity: Digital Business with Deloitte

09:20
A conversation with Bill Briggs, Chief Technology Officer at Deloitte Consulting about digital transformation and the role of the CIO. This interview is part of the CXOTALK series. CIOs face the challenge of maintaining technology and infrastructure while participating in corporate innovation. In today's digital world, organizations expect the CIO and IT to possess technology expertise coupled with deep knowledge of business operations and strategy. It is a challenge that the best CIOs do master, however. I asked the Chief Technology Officer of Deloitte, Bill Briggs, to share his thoughts on how CIOs can take advantage of the great opportunities presented by digital transformation. These opportunities demand an IT cultural shift from the proverbial "default to no" attitude toward genuine collaboration with the business. CIO survival depends on putting the "default to no" behind us. For more, see https://cxotalk.com/episodes ------------------ Check out all the CXOTALK episodes: https://cxotalk.com/episodes ------------------ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/cxotalk ------------------ And so, we use a construct called “Right Speed IT.” Others have used bimodal, or two-speed IT. But part of that is to say, Agile is becoming the new norm, and it’s probably a hybrid Agile, because a lot of what you have to do in those legacy systems don’t lend themselves to the same speed as the pure digital cloud development. So, how do I balance, and truly adopt Agile? - Which means a pretty significant change in my IT shop and how the business interacts with IT to deliver a project and program. It means I have to instill a culture of curiosity, and a culture of learning in my shop, and personally in myself to stay relevant and credible. It means I have to invest in these tools, and I use dev-ops as just a number I love for a lot of things, but I need to be able to automate testing in a way that I probably can’t do at scale today, I need to automate, release management; and so it’s less hands-on, manual labor on keyboards. I need to invest in autonomic processes that help IT run, and help me free up my people to do more important things. And so, this mix, you know, and not just being the order-taker, when the business has decided to invest in a space, or even worse, the business decided to invest in a space and already contracted the vendor to do it. The CIO, the IT department, should be the spark for the imagination, and certainly should help drive the solution-shaping of what the right collection of technology should be in play. And then, owning that whole deliver and run cycle, but doing it faster. And I always say - Right Speed IT - sometimes my tagline or kicker is, “The only right speed is faster.” [Laughter] But, the idea that there are two extremes and never the twain shall meet is fantasy that I’ve never found in the world, right? This hybrid model has to be able to win. Michael Krigsman: We have a question from Twitter, from Arsalan Khan, and I want to get through this one relatively quickly, because I want to talk about technology as well. So, Arsalan Khan is asking, “How do you think about innovation and the different types of innovation?” And so, when I mentioned up front our products, our solutions, our hybrid offerings, a lot of that is geared toward those spaces, and a lot of times with specific clients who were co-investing on something that’s extremely important in the future of their business, but they’re not ready or able to take on all the challenges themselves. And typically, it has cognitive analytics, and machine learning, and AI, and digital and these things [...] So I love the question, and if you search the ten types of innovation, it’s a great bit of work that we have. There’s actually a book written about it, and we use it all the time. What’s really been fascinating is we’re seeing a strong desire to bring cross-industry knowledge. It’s not just how do we understand what other retailers are doing, but can we learn from what oil and gas has done to use fiberoptics to understand the actual flow of oil and gas 25,000 feet down in the ground, that same technology might be able to be used in a retail store to understand customer flow. And so it’s bringing together…You know, innovation, people think a lot about lightbulbs and Eureka moments. Most of the time it’s the importing and exporting of ideas, and we’d love to be the broker of that.
