How good is RAW video? (Canon 5D mark ii)

05:57
In this video, I test the new RAW video recording with the Canon 5D mark ii. Raw video recording gives you uncompressed video, which looks like it was shot with a big budget camera! To achieve this, you need to download and install the Magic Lantern hack in to your camera, and download the RAW build. You can read more about it here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/ PS. Be careful when installing the hack, because it may damage your camera. Since the RAW hack on the Canon 5D mark ii doesn't support FULL HD video capture when using the whole sensor, I shot everything in 2.35:1. To capture RAW video, you need a really fast CF/SD card. It's quite complicated to work with the RAW files in post production, but since it's RAW, it's a dream to colorcorrect the videos :) Thomas Leypoldt is a composer, and he have made the music for several of my videos. He does actually have a Youtube channel where he uploads his great filmatic soundtracks. I feel privileged to have a personal soundtrack. Thanks Thomas :) Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArVP6nlZEAE If your want to stay tuned with our videos, you can subscribe here on Youtube. Brighton | 5D Mark II 3K raw with Magic Lantern

03:08
October I finally repaired my 5D mark II after it being broken for 6 months because of all the magic lantern progress (https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=19336.0). October is also the month the 5D mark II turned 10 years old, so happy birthday to it. Filmed with 2880x1080 resolution in 12 bit raw. This video took a month to edit. Would like to change some things but uploading takes hours. Lenses: Helios 44, Jupiter 9, Takumar 135mm 3.5 and Cosina 19-35 for one shot Made using 100% free (open source) software. Magic Lantern on the camera. Graded and converted to prores in MLV App (https://github.com/ilia3101/MLV-App), the world's best raw converter for Magic Lantern video, 10/10. Edited in Pitivi(why it took a month to edit). On Linux. Also, just like in my London video, there is an MLV App issue: this video was made before it had camera matrix colour correction and scientific white balance , so the colour quality of this video is worse than it would have been had I made it a couple of weeks later. Gymnopedie No. 1 Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Note: there is a horrible stuttering issue because of how YouTube has processed the file. Motion looks awful. I do not know how to fix this. The issue is not present on phone YouTube. Note 2: Looks fixed Note 3: no I think it's not, original file motion looks better

12bit 5D Markii Magic Lantern Experimental Raw Video & Digic IV Development

06:15
Hello everyone ! sorry I've been away so long . I being putting my effort to farther developing Magic Lantern for the Digic IV camera's mainly the 5D Mark ii & 7D . I'm happy to report that we are very close in getting UHD/3.5K raw video & Lossless compression plus we have achieved 10-12bit raw video in 1:1 Liveview , but as a side effect this give corrupted 3x Crop_Mode video (Sorry I'm working on it) . I shot this video in 12bit 1856x1044 @ 23.976 fps with mlv_rec plus audio 44.1 khz , I was abled to get continuous raw video on my CF card 1066x Lexar 64GB , I shot a total of 30GB without dropping any frames. I had a write speed of 66MB/s with audio normally in 14bit @ 1856x928 write speed is about 69MB/s , so with a decrease in write speed and a increase in resolution .There is still problems that need to fixed e.g. only works with pure analog ISO's (100,200,400,800,1600) no digital push or pull ISO e.g. 160,320,500, etc. ... that causes a lockup/frozen liveview and needs the battery pulled , be on that it works will even has HDMI support without issue . I do like the 12bit image far better then 14bit , give a very nice cinematic image and very clean shadows. Edited & graded in FCPX with Film Convert Pro , used the "RED MX" for camera source ( closest to magic lantern raw for 5D2) KD P400 Ptra film emulation . Used my canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L Lens @ f4 200 ISO 23.976p with frame over ride set to exact. Hope everyone enjoy the magic lantern development update on the DIGIC IV Camera's . The uploaded file is a Apple ProRes4444 .

My first RAW shoot with Magic Lantern on Canon 5d MK II. H.264 vs RAW

04:52
i remember the first 3ccd camcorder I touched. It was the sony vx-1000. I was amazed that finally a regular consumer like me can take some pretty cool looking images like the big boys. I haven't felt that excited about a camera since then. That is, until I purchased the Canon 5d mkII (except maybe when the Panasonic DVX100 came out). I was blown away with the image quality and film like look. When I was in the market to upgrade to add an additional member to my camera family, my buddy Vinny Minton (Imperial Video Productions) told me check out some RAW footage taken with my camera model. He said I may reconsider. I saw amazing videos online about the RAW functionality that Magic Lantern (ML) offered Canon users. Once I installed it on my camera and used it, I fell in love with my camera all over again. I use an iMac from 2010 with about 12 GB of RAM. It took about 6-8 hrs to import, process, and export the raw files you see in this sample. That did NOT include editing, exporting, and color grading. So it does take a lot of patience. Is it worth it? Well, I certainly believe so in most cases if you have the time, but I surely don't see myself shooting RAW all the time. There are certain limitations and a longer workflow process that I don't think, realistically, I will make the time for. I haven't purchased a camera since 2008 when the Canon 5d mkII came out. I was always tempted to buy the the newest gear out there but there was so many cool and innovative cameras out on the market, I felt I needed to make the best with what I have. I think for now, I'll concentrate more on the art of film making vs getting the most expensive gear. Plus this high quality hack will keep me happy in the meantime :) I always remember when a good friend once told me, "it's not the paintbrush that makes the painter." Hope you enjoy this sample. Let me know what you think in the comments below. Cheers! DETAILS: Canon 5d MkII Lenses 16-35, 50 1.2 CF Card (need a fast 1 - preferably 1000x and 100-150mb/s): Toshiba Exceria Pro 32GB. Magic Lantern 5D Mark ii WideScope 3k 10bit Raw Video - Experimental

03:37
Hello All --- Great News !!!! will we are almost there ! 4k/UHD Raw video on the 5D Mark ii , we had a break thought on the forum & now we have 3k (2880x1080) 10bit Raw video at Widescope format (2.66:1) :)) this in 3x Crop_mode or (5x zoom) with a crop record module , same as the 5D mark iii with 4k . Currently the data rate for this frame size is 89 MB/s , that's greater then the 77MB/s the 5D Marrk ii can do . Yes , but there is also under development the CF card interface to increase the write speed to 105MB/s . You may wounder how it can be ! Will the 5D2 connects to the CF card as UDMA 6 no matter if the the card is UDMA 7 . Thought Low Level access to the register we are able to "force" UDMA 7 with a 30% increase in write speed , so around 100-110 MB/s , but there is a side effect after recording a mlv file it corrupts the magic lantern file system . So more work needed to figure out what the issue is . Then after that , raw compression to lossless , which will increase write speed by 40-50% in 14bit lossless , once again like the 5D3 . Shot the quick sample at 2880x1080 @ 23.976 with frame skipping enable , so there is a few drop frames and it is noticeable from time to time but it is still usable . I what to show that near UHD is possible and a working concept . So if you see a some out of sync audio , it because a recorded the audio on the my N4H , i have to cut up the audio a lot to make it match the best i could , please take that in account when watch the video . Used the EF 24-70f2.8L @ 24mm , crop factor at 3k is 1.95 = 46.8mm , set to f4 1/42 shutter with ISO 400 . I used mlv_dump on windows 7 to extract to true 10bit raw 3.71MB per-frame , imported the Cdng's in to blackmagic Resolve 12.5(Wins) and did a basic raw adjustment to rec709 color space and exported to DNxHR 444 , finished off in FCPX , exported to ProRes 422HQ and uploaded that file . Notice Youtube has not 3k or 2K so it's just 1080p Sorry . plus it seem youtube has put the Audio out of Sync more then i thought , Sorry i'll try and fix this .

SUNDANCE - 5D Mark II - Magic Lantern RAW This is my Magic Lantern RAW Test with a 5D Mark II. Filmed with the 35mm 2.0 IS only and a Glidecam. ISO160, 1880 x 800 upscaled to 1920 x 817. Color Grading made with Lightroom 5 - Exported as Tiff - Compiled with QT7Pro to ProRes 422 HQ (yeah!) Additional corrections were made in Premiere CS6. Exported as H264 Footage. Grain was made in PP. Shooting this video took 15minutes - 19GB on my Transcend 1000x 32GB Card and a few dropped frames at the beginning or ending - nothing big. The editing experience was mind blowing. The .dng processing in LR5 is a completely new world of quality and possibilities!

Please Note:Sorry to every one that has Comment on My Videos, Google Has Block Me from responding & viewing your comments. Since Google has Taken Over YouTube There are Forcing me to use there Google+ Account and i refuse to Do that. You Can leave Comments on Vimeo.com video sharing Site, Link below https://vimeo.com/home/myvideos I Can respond there, Freely plus all Video Here are Also there :) This is a Full 3:2 Sensor test on the 5D Mark ii With Magic Lantern 14bit Raw. 1872x1250 23.976p ,I show how well these sizes Scale to Full HD. Of late i have been working with Film Convert Pro, i find that 5D Mrk ii really likes being Mapped to the Red One Camera source and Fuji 8553 ET Film Stock. Also give a little intro to Magic Lantern, i shotin 3x Crop mode at 2k ([email protected]) with a ND fader stoped down 50% on my EF 24-70mm f2.8L In crop mode it was 72mm. The reason why i used crop mode for my Into speech was to eliminate any Aliasing and Moire, and i find in crop mode i have better Low light capture because there is no Line skipping. Note: i also used my Canon HV20 Camcorder connected to my Ninja HDMI recorder ProRes 422HQ 23.976p. This is one of those HDV camcorder that output 8bit 422 hdmi uncompressed. Some people have being asking what card i'm using, i use Lexar 1000x 64GB & 32GB And the other question that keeps coming up is "how do use get video to look so Good on YouTube" Since i Work in Final Cut Pro X when i'm finish i sent my project to Apple Compressor Viva FCPX export button, then i have a special preset, 1080p 30MB/s Main Profile Level 5.0, 6 frame reference in a mp4 container

Raw Video Workflow for 5D Mark III & Magic Lantern

10:54
In this video I share with you my post production workflow for magic lantern raw video. Shot on the 5D mark III and processed in davinci resolve. My LUT: https://www.dropbox.com/s/p2keuag2uh0zm00/MTL_LUT_V1.0.CUBE.zip?dl=0 Get MLVFS: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=13152.0 For a long time I was frustrated by the process of getting raw footage to look just like the h264 image I loved (with the added benefits of sharpness and dynamic range). I spent a few months trying to figure out the best way to emulate the internal codec. After many failed attempts I finally created a LUT that comes very close and accurately converts Raw footage to a very beautiful looking canon-esque image. I've included lots of sample footage so that you can decide if you like it or not. Using Davinci Resolve, I walk you through the entire process (except for the DNG conversion) from raw to a flawless end product ready for editing. Let me know if this helped by leaving a comment or a like. Canon 5D Mark III - Magic Lantern - Continuous Raw

I had just received a new fast CF card as the sun was setting by the house. Also Gunpowder was out trying out her new knee. So I grabbed the 5D and did my first run of continuous Raw recording. You can get the card and camera here: Sandisk, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1000363-REG/sandisk_sdcfxps_064g_a46_64gb_extreme_pro_compact.html/BI/20174/KBID/14247 5D Markiii, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/847545-REG/Canon_5260A002_EOS_5D_Mark_III.html/BI/20174/KBID/14247 I've used Magic Lantern in the past on both the EOS-M and 5Dmkii. And I haven't been over enthusiastic given the price and ease of use of the Blackmagic cameras. But with this its different. It works so much smoother and lag free. And the on going recording makes it worth the 1 step extra in post of converting to DNG. BTW, its now possible to convert to lossless compression DNGs! Magic Lantern 5k/4k/3k RAW Test Shots

03:30
This was done a few days after Magic Lantern announced a new experimental build for the 5D Mark III. As soon as I found out about it I downloaded the new build (magiclantern-crop_rec_4k.2017Apr06.5D3123), drove up into the hills and tried to get a few shots in before it got too dark. The vintage lenses I used probably aren't ideal for this sort of test but they are what I had with me at the time. The 4K and UHD modes are not completely stable, I couldn't really get them to be usuable, either before of lower frame rates (below 24fps) or because I could only record for a few seconds (as a result of the 5DIII's CF card write speed. 3K however is very useable... no limit to the recording time in 24p until you reach the end of your CF card space. The 5k (at 5fps) looks absolutely incredible and I may use that from time to time on product shots or static landscapes. All of these new experimental modes I likely won't use in any sort of production environment solely because the real time preview is not accurate (slow framerate and the framing doesn't match completely) but its very fun to play with. I'm sure the ML team will continue to develop these. I did not have a single corrupt frame nor did the camera come close to overheating after performing these tests for a good 40 minutes. At the moment I do feel the normal 1080p RAW is completely usable in a production environment and I never think twice about using it.

Sony a7R ii VS Canon 5D iii (Magic Lantern Raw)

01:55
For the side-by-side comparison, the Sony (SLOG2, 4K, S35 crop) is on the left and the Canon (1080P) is on the right. Various lenses. The focus slightly off on the 5D3 on the CU. a7R ii footage was graded in Premiere with the 'Neutral Start' creative look and then tweaked the exposure and saturation. 5D3 raw footage brought into Resolve in BMD Film Color space and then applied Cinelog. In Premiere, I added the Alexa Default LogC2Rec.709 LUT and made a few exposure and contrast tweaks. No windows used for footage from either camera. The footage could have been stylized further by hand or film emulation, but this seemed like a good point to stop in terms of showing those skintones.

Comparing Magic Lantern Raw vs H.264 on My Canon 5D Mark III

02:28
http://www.learningdslrvideo.com/magic-lantern-raw-vs-h-264/ Quick comparison between raw vs compressed H.264 on my Canon 5D Mark III. I am mostly testing out the white balance first to get that right before I start doing tests outside. I will try to do a video on my workflow for post processing the raw video in the future. The only thing I processed for the raw video was White Balance and a little bit of sharpening. I noticed that the raw had a little more contrast than the H.264 version (that was surprising) so I added just a hint of contrast to the H.264 to help even out the comparison because for this test I mainly wanted to test for detail only and not other items like dynamic range. So is there a way to not have raw video default to 6200 Kelvin and a +66 tint? I bet there is a menu item I have missed within the Magic Lantern menus that will allow for WB changes to be transferred to programs like Adobe Camera Raw to it remembers how I shot it. Magic Lantern New 10bit Raw Video on 5D Mark ii

08:35
Hello all and Happy 2017 ! Over the last 3 years magic lantern developers have been working on reverse engineering raw bit reduction , finally in late fall of 2016 a big break thought ! a1ex discovered that Canon has 10 , 12bit raw format all ready there it was a matter of turning on the options and of course make the code complaint to ML raw video format (MLV) . Sounds easy right ! Will not so as the Preview/Liveview is in 14bit and when you record 10 or 12bit the preview lockup but not the camera. About half of the cameras that support Magic Lantern have workable bit reduction (10-12) so don't expect to have bit reduction in any of the nightly builds just yet , if you want to test it out , you will have to compile the source code yourself or ask nicely on the 10-12bit thread and maybe someone will help you out . But it would be better if more people could help with "C" code to get all the cameras working with bit reductions. Shot this with my 5D Mark ii with new bit reduction code @ 10bit 2144x1076 23.976p in 3xcrop mode , used EF24-70 f2.8L @ 35mm with crop @ 2.60 that work out 91mm . Now with bit reduction i get about a 30% smaller file then extract with mlvfs to get my 16bit Cdng's. I uploaded the file as a Apple ProRes4444 for best quality. *Please Note* I have had many request for this experimental 10-12bit build , as ML has removed there link to it I will host it in my Google Drive for the next 4-6 weeks :) read this post for link http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5601.msg178437#msg178437

5D Mark III test also available: http://youtu.be/xrHtdK-g0Pw Ran a few tests with the 5D Mark II utilizing the Magic Lantern 14-bit RAW hack and Film Convert film stock emulator. MUST WATCH IN 1080p HD. A lot of RAW quality and nearly all of the definition and detail in film grain emulation is lost online. Download the original video for best viewing quality. Shot with Canon EF 24-105mm F/4 L. RAW footage shot at 1880x1056 (MkII not capable of full 1080p RAW), RAW to DNG using RAWMagic, DNG upscaled to 1920x1080 ProRes422 using After Effects. Basic color correction and Film Convert plugin applied within FCP7.
