Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck | Setting the stage | 60second Recap®

01:27
http://www.60secondrecap.com/study-guide/john-steinbeck-of-mice-and-men-setting/ In "Of Mice and Men," author John Steinbeck uses the techniques of cinema to bring his readers into the action with George and Lennie. Like any good screenwriter (and yes, Steinbeck was one of those, too—check out "East of Eden," starring James Dean), Steinbeck sets the stage of each chapter with the kind of detail that helps you see what he sees. In "Of Mice and Men," Steinbeck shows his mastery of "You Are There" storytelling.

FILM DESCRIPTION: Gary Sinese directed this respectful re-telling of John Steinbeck's classic novel, with Sinese as the wily George and John Malkovich as the brutish, simple-minded Lennie. Set during the Depression era, the film opens as George and Lennie are running from a woman with a torn dress, who has sent a gang of ruffians to chase the two out of the county. After a long bus ride and a ten-mile walk, George and Lennie arrive at a migrant farm in California's San Joaquin Valley, where they seek work. George dreams of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land where he and Lennie can build a home; he hopes that in California the two can realize their dream. Unfortunately, the foreman of the ranch, Curley (Casey Siemaszko), enjoys tormenting Lennie, while Curley's frustrated wife (Sherilyn Fenn) entices Lennie with her sexual allure. George warns Lennie to steer clear of Curley's wife, but Lennie follows her to a barn where a tragedy occurs and George and Lennie's dreams are shattered. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck | Motifs | 60second Recap®

01:26
http://www.60secondrecap.com/study-guide/john-steinbeck-of-mice-and-men-motifs/ In Steinbeck's universe, the greatest bond is the brotherly bond. The relationship between George and Lennie is the axis around which the action in "Of Mice and Men" revolves. As for that other great bond—the bond between men and women—Steinbeck takes a more skeptical view. In "Of Mice and Men," men may be corrupted, but it's the women who are at fault.

Of Mice and Men | Overview | 60second Recap® study guide

01:17
http://www.60secondrecap.com/study-guide/john-steinbeck-of-mice-and-men-summary/ John Steinbeck, who wrote "Of Mice and Men," wants you to know something. Steinbeck wants you to know that the American Dream, the dream of opportunity and prosperity, doesn't apply to most people. Because most people are like George and Lennie—the main characters in this book. "Of Mice and Men" presents George and Lennie as pawns in a power game beyond their comprehension. In Steinbeck's America, Big Money rules, and folks like George and Lennie are doomed from the start.

Of Mice and Men | Plot | 60second Recap® study guide

01:18
http://www.60secondrecap.com/study-guide/john-steinbeck-of-mice-and-men-the-plot/ From the very first page of "Of Mice and Men," main characters George and Lennie are toast. They're toast because they're poor. They're toast because they're simple. George and Lennie are also toast because that's the way author John Steinbeck thinks America works—dooming ordinary people to failure before the first chapter of their lives has been told. Maybe that's why John Steinbeck tells the basic story of "Of Mice and Men" in its very first chapter.

Of Mice and Men Chapter 1 Summary By John Steinbeck Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/book_cheats Check out my Website: http://mybookcheats.com/ Chapter 2 link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoQ7DrSSqYY Opening Music: TNT by TroyBoi & Tincup https://soundcloud.com/trapmusic/tnt-by-troyboi-tincup The first chapter is set in the scene next to a river with a bunch of sycamore trees in Soledad, California. We are introduced to the two main characters, George and Lennie. George is a small guy with defined features. Lennie is a huge guy, with a shapeless face. Lennie is somewhat mentally challenged. These two men were run off of their last ranch in Weeds, California because Lennie tries to pet some girls dress because it looked soft. They are coming down to Soledad, California to work on a new ranch where nobody knows them and where they don’t have a reputation. Throughout the chapter Lennie keeps catching mice and accidentally killing them because he pets them too hard. He is literally obsessed with things that are soft and nice to pet. George makes the two of them camp the night there because he doesn’t want to the run the risk of people finding out how slow Lennie is and them losing the opportunity for work. George takes care of Lennie because he is a decent person and feels like Lennie can’t take care of himself. George tells Lennie when they get to the new ranch to not say anything but to just stand there. He tells Lennie that if he does something to get them into trouble again to come back to this spot next to the river and hid in the brush until he comes. In a story about friendship, fate and fortitude, two farmhands wander through California’s Salinas Valley, leaning on each other to find their way in this powerful adaptation of John Steinbeck’s quintessential novel, Of Mice & Men. The esteemed Jenny Lord of The Juilliard School will direct Serenbe favorites Daniel Parvis and Blake Burgess, cast as George and Lennie, the iconic duo of witty small guy and loafing giant. View lush Serenbe, transformed to a working farm of the depression-era dustbowl, with live horses wandering about the rustic barn and stark minimalism artfully at play.
