A video by the The Rafter Radiocarbon Laboratory NZ regarding carbon dating. Full article and more videos- http://www.eequalsmcsquared.auckland.ac.nz/sites/emc2/videos/cool-kiwi-science.cfm 'The Rafter Radiocarbon Laboratory has a long history in radiocarbon dating. To determine the radiocarbon age of an organic material it is necessary to measure the proportion of radiocarbon (C14) in the carbon that it contains. The technical problem to be solved is the detection of the rare isotope C14 in the presence of the much more abundant isotopes C12 and C13. The natural abundance of 14C is about one 14C atom per trillion (10^12) atoms of C12. What can you date? Anything containing carbon between 150 and 60,000 years old (i.e.: wood, leather, bone, paper, seawater, gases, ice cores, pollen, pottery, coral, seeds, charcoal, blood residues, sediment, soil, shell, textiles, plant and animal tissue, insect remains, cave paintings, resins and glues).' How it works Carbon-14 has half-life of 5730 years Natural abundance of C-14 is one C-14 atom to one trillion C-12 atomsSample is purified physically and chemically in the 'pre-treatment lab' Sample is burnt at 900C turning it into CO2 which is combined with hydrogen and passed over an iron catalyst. Result is pure carbon and water. Graphite carbon pellet is placed at one end of linear accelerator Carbon atoms are 'chipped off' graphite pellet and sent through acceleratorComputer counts the three different types of carbon atoms at other end of accelerator Ratio of carbon-12 and carbon-14 atoms indicates age of sample.

All living things are made up of about 25% carbon. The carbon atom is unique because it can bind to other carbon atoms to form long chains and rings and these in turn serve as the backbone of the complex molecules that make life possible. The nucleus of a typical carbon atom has 6 protons and 6 neutrons. But about one carbon atom out of every 100 has one extra neutron. This has very little effect on the properties of the carbon, other than making it slightly heavier. Chemically, it acts just like any other carbon atom. It is called Carbon-13. And there is an even rarer type of carbon. It is formed high in the atmosphere when cosmic rays strike atoms of nitrogen converting them into Carbon -14. Carbon-14 is also chemically identical to regular carbon. But the nucleus of carbon-14 is unstable. After some amount of time, which could range from a few days to many thousands of years, carbon-14 decays back into nitrogen. But since carbon-14 is formed at a steady rate, there is a constant level of it in the environment. Out of every trillion carbon atoms in your body, only one dozen of them are carbon-14. As long as an organism is alive and eating, it maintains a constant ratio of carbon-14 to regular carbon. But once an organism dies, the amount of carbon-14 in its body begins to decrease. After 5000 years about half of the original number of carbon-14 atoms will have decayed. Using this fact, scientists can tell how long ago an organism died. • http://www.cassiopeiaproject.com .

This video was first posted a year ago on the Potholer54debunks channel. I will be bringing other videos over from that channel from time to time, to be placed in a new playlist of Golden Crocoduck nominees. But new videos will still be posted on Potholer54debunks first, and remain there until the danger of false flagging has passed. The reason for having two channels is that creationists have had frequently had science channels like mine shut down. If this happens to me, I want subscribers to have an alternative venue where my work can continue. Thanks to all my subscribers on both channels for your support. My apologies to those who have seen this video before and are having it imposed on them once again. My videos promoting science over belief in all fields will continue.

Few people who think that radiometric dating proves the earth is billions of years old really understand the underlying assumptions. Using simple illustrations, geologist Dr. Andrew Snelling examines these assumptions and equips viewers with information to counter their anti-biblical arguments. Though this topic can seem intimidating, Dr. Snelling boils it down to laymans level and walks the viewer through a basic understanding of the process used to date rocks and fossils. Using simple illustrations, the assumptions used to arrive at dates are exposed as faulty—and the evolutionary timescale along with them. Then, through several lines of evidence, including carbon-14 found in diamonds and fossils, the inconsistent nature of radiometric ages is revealed. Find our how creationists can turn this apparent foe into a friend by starting with Scripture as the ultimate authority!

I'm thinking about getting back into dating. I'm only going to be seeing bits of cloth and broken plates, so there's no need to tell my wife. Besides - they're not what they used to be in terms of activity... Maybe I shouldn't put this on the internet. What, use restraint while posting to the web? Naah. It'll be fine. In other news, I hope this shows you how you can solve any radioactive dating problem from a very tiny amount of info. It's all related via some simple equations, so get familiar with them.

THIS VIDEO IS LACED WITH SARCASM (to those who have difficulty sensing it). Scientists admit that radiometric dating, one of the fundamental techniques used to show the earth is billions of years old is flawed!!! The earth is not 4.55 billion years old. Watch and find out just how old it really is. Of course, scientists are always refining their techniques, it's part of of science works. Creationists have pointed to a number of "results" from radiometric dating that prove it doesn't work. Here I go over all the reasons why. Why is there Carbon-14 in some coal. Why did Potassium-Argon dating of the 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens give ages on the order of hundreds of thousands of years. It is often argued that radio carbon dating is a safe way of measuring age on. What is often forgotten, is that this method will also require certain assumptions, and that the measurement result is dependent on these assumptions is correct. Kent Hovind have some thoughts about this.

Dating techniques dendrochronology and carbon dating When you watch these programmes and they say that things are so many thousand years old, how can they tell? Dendrochronology is also called the dating of tree rings. It is a method of dating that allows you to determine the exact year then the specific rings were formed and also gives information about the atmospheric conditions at that time. It also works on wood in works or art and architecture, like wooden frames around paintings and furniture As trees grow the new growth is in layers of cells near the bark and the growth rate depends on the climate that season. There is more growth in summer than winter so the tree ring will be thicker in the summer. If there is better weather one year then the rings will be thicker and worse weather thinner. The oldest tree ring measurements found so far range from 12,580 - 13,900 years old. Radiocarbon dating It is based around radiocarbon also called carbon 14. It is an isotope of carbon An isotope has the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons It is taken up by plants in photosynthesis and incorporated into plant tissue the plants are eaten by animals and it is incorporated into animal tissues. When the organism dies there is no more take up or release of carbon with the environment for that organism. So what you can do is measure how much carbon 14 is in the plant or animal and then calculate how long ago it died. This is because the carbon 14 undergoes radioactive decay. It has a half life - the amount of time that half of the substance decays and for carbon 14 it is about 5,730 years So if half the carbon in a dead organisms or coal or a wood is carbon 14 then that organism was alive about 5,730 If a quarter of it is carbon 14 then that is a half and another half so 11,460 years old The oldest dates that can reliably be measured by this process are from about 50,000 years ago. What if we want to measure the age above this, look out for dating techniques part two. A new Science fact every day on Facebook live and YouTube every day, 365 days of the year. We discuss the famed Turin Shroud in a chemistry context, including how radiocarbon dating has famously been used on the religious relic. More links in description below ↓↓↓ Correction: It's a proton and electron COMBINING to create C14... I made the poor Professor stand in the Italian sun for so long waiting for the right light conditions that I may have temporarily fried his brain. Correction is included as an annotaion.
