Things like GICs, Stocks, and Mutual Funds. We’ve also discussed some rules to keep in mind as you approach investing. As we mentioned before, our favourite investment option is one that is low risk, but provides medium to high rewards. Remember Index funds? They are a type of mutual fund that imitates certain stock indexes, hence the name. In Canada we have one main stock exchange, which is the Toronto Stock Exchange, or TSX. You can go on Wikipedia right now and look at a list of stocks that are traded on that exchange. You can’t actually buy the TSX, but some banks have created a mutual fund that is very close to holding all of the stocks listed within the TSX. There are mutual funds that mimic other exchanges like S&P500 and the NASDAQ. Because index funds represent the stock exchange, and the stock exchange’s composition doesn’t change much, index funds are what’s known as “passively traded”. On the other hand, you have mutual fund managers who are actively buying and trading stocks to get better returns. They are trying to “beat the market”. These mutual funds are “actively traded”. So with passively traded funds, the fees associated with buying index funds are much lower, usually less than 1% of total assets. Actively traded mutual funds hover around the 2% mark. Wait, 1%, 2%, of what? These fees are asset-based, meaning it’s a percentage of what you have invested. This means that if you have $10,000 invested in an index fund, you are paying $100 a year in fees. Compare that with paying $200 a year on a 2% fee mutual fund. Index funds are recommended by most billionaire investors such as Warren Buffet because through statistical data, they perform better than most mutual funds offered to you by your financial advisor, yet charge significantly less management fees. Here’s a fun fact: 96% of all professionally managed mutual funds don’t beat the stock index. That means you have a 4% chance to beat the market when you choose a mutual fund offered to you by a financial advisor. Let’s imagine you went to the casino to play blackjack. The goal of blackjack is to beat the dealer’s hand, to get as close to 21 as possible without going over. If you get two face cards right off the bat, you have 20 points, which is a great hand. However, if the idiot inside you says “hit me”, in hopes of getting an ace, you only have an 8% chance of getting one. So, think about it, you are two times more likely to get an ace in blackjack then you are to outperform an index with a mutual fund. Why would you consider putting something so important as your life savings into something with such a low chance of success? We’re not saying you’ll lose your money in mutual funds, but the index, and more specifically index funds, have been proven to perform substantially better in the long run, in both market booms and crashes. So why do banks promote mutual funds so much? Well remember that you’re paying a really high fee to hold these mutual funds, and banks are a business too. Your financial advisor becomes a salesperson when they recommend funds for you because they are being told by their manager and company to promote certain funds. So be sure to do your research, and in later videos we’ll reveal how you can ask the right questions to your financial advisor. Along with stock index funds, there are bond index funds as well. These follow the same concept in that the fund will have as many different types of bonds in it as possible.

Category Management Series Tip #8 - What Is A "Good" or "Bad" Index?

05:38
In this week's category management tip, Sue Nicholls will walk you through some examples of when an "index" measure is used in category management (Index vs ACV; Fair Share Index). There is a tendency to generalize and say that an index over 100 is "good", or overdeveloped, and an index below 100 is "bad", or underdeveloped. But as Sue explains, the index should only be seen as a benchmark, and needs to be tied in with a retailer or supplier's strategies before you can determine if the number is "good" or "bad". Index Management - Stock Selection and Trading Strategy | HINDI

13:45
Stock Market Index Management is being discussed multiple times by me in my videos and during live streaming. In this video, i have discussed Stock Market Index Management at length. Basically, if the index is increasing but overall breadth is either negative or neutral then it means equity market index management. In Nifty 50, the weightage of only 9 stocks is 50% and the weightage of rest 41% stocks is balance 50%. Therefore, if 9 stocks with most weightage continue to perform then the index i.e. Nifty or Sensex will continue to rise thus depict bullish trend. However, the reality is different. For example, in a current scenario out of 50 stocks approx 50% have delivered positive returns in last 30 days whereas rest 30% have delivered negative returns. Therefore, the direction of the market is not so clear. If you liked this video, You can "Subscribe" to my YouTube Channel. ETFs vs. Index Funds: Investing 101 w/ Doug Flynn, CFP

05:34
Doug Flynn, CFP, of Flynn Zito Capital Management, LLC on ETFs vs. Index Funds. Ali: Explain the difference between an ETF and a mutual fund... Doug: Well an ETF is a mutual fund that you know and love, but it trades on the exchange, so you can buy throughout the day. Versus a traditional fund which trades once a day at the end of the day. Ali: Okay, so let's talk about index funds, which really came first. First you had stocks, then you had index funds. Doug: Yes, an index fund is just trying to replicate a particular index, which you can't invest in directly, but this is a way to replicate that. So if you like the stocks in the S&P 500, or the stocks in the Dow... Ali: It used to be that you could just read about the stocks in the Dow or the S&P 500, and buy the individual stocks. If you wanted to, you could buy all thirty in the Dow... Doug: That's right. Ali: But then, we came up with index funds, which said, "You can do the Dow, you can do the S&P 500, you can do the Nasdaq, you can do...I don't know...Easter European industries. Doug: Exactly, and that is going to track an index, there isn't a lot of trading or active management in there. You can do that in a traditional mutual fund format or in an ETF, which is the exchange traded version of that, which just means it trades throughout the day. Ali: Generally speaking, index brought the management fees, these fees associated with mutual funds, down, because there's not somebody doing a lot of active work, and ETFs brought them down further. Doug: Correct. Ali: So why would I choose one vs. the other? Doug: So if you buy an ETF, you're typically placing a trade like a stock. So, if you're with an online broker, they're typically going to charge you some type of a trading fee to do that, whereas a mutual fund may have a minimum, but won't necessarily have a transaction charge to do that. There are some cases where that isn't the case. Ali: If you're doing this for fees, you better look at this and understand that you're paying for trades. Doug: Yeah. Most people are putting money away each month. You know, one hundred dollars per month is what they're doing. You can't really do that with an ETF because you're making a transaction every single time. That's where a mutual fund might be better. Ali: So you're putting one hundred bucks a month away, but you're paying ten dollars for the transaction, you gotta weigh that in. Doug: Maybe you use the index fund for a little while, and then you have $10,000, and then you can actually do those transactions. So that's where you might want it in different ways. And that's where it's cheaper. Like anything else, the more money you have, it might be a little bit cheaper. Ali: One thing you warn is not all ETFs are created equal. What do you mean by that? Doug: Well as an example, the two major providers, there's Vanguard, there's i Shares, which are two different providers of ETFs. And you have to look at the structure. And the structure of i shares in particular, they're completely separate, which means their tax ramifications are very low. They don't necessarily pay capital gains to speak of because they're just trading in and out of the ETF structure by itself: it's a stand-alone ETF. Vanguard did what is kind of a bolt-on to its existing mutual funds. What's happened there, is some cases, when the fund pays a capital gains distribution... Ali: Because they sold a stock at a profit... Doug: Right, a large institution wants to sell a bunch of their funds, it transfers into the ETF itself. So all ETFs are not created equal, and you should look at, if I want bond index ETFs, look a little bit deeper and look where are there capital gains distributions. Many people know there are these issues in traditional mutual funds that are actively managed. And they don't scroll down and see if there are differences between the different ETF providers. Ali: And of course that makes a difference depending on how you're investing. Whether this is inside a tax-preferred investment, or it's just out in the open. Doug: If it's an IRA it doesn't really matter, but if it's in a taxable accound, the last thing you want is further tax surprises you thought you were avoiding by being in ETF format. Ali: This is a business for people who feel they're not going to outperform the market with their own selections. Doug: Exactly, you've said in a particular area I don't think I can bring value, I can't find a manager who will bring value in a particular are, I'm just going to index then. And as a portfolio manager and as people who manage money, there are times when we find that you can't bring value with managers, and that they're out of favor, and you might index more. But we're agnostic.

10:56
Passive vs Active Fund Management: What's the Difference? Index Funds and Mutual Funds Explained. Thinking of investing some of your savings in the financial markets? How about using managed funds? Do you know the difference between Active & Passive Fund Managers? This investing tutorial will explain this difference and some key ideas behind the two forms of asset allocation. These lessons will be applicable to Mutual Funds (Active Investing) & Index Funds (Passive Investing). So what's included in the explanatory video? * The Key Difference between Passive & Active Management * Issues, Benefits & Drawbacks of Active Funds * Issues, Benefits & Drawbacks of Passive Funds * And a Review If you'd prefer to read a description rather than watch a full lesson, here is the key idea: The key difference between active & passive fund management investing (mutual fund and index fund investing).... Active Funds; Actively try to beat a benchmark performance (such as an index) by picking individual groups of stocks that will outperform the market. Passive Funds; Attempt to mirror the performance of an index by holding groups of stocks that reflect the underlying index as per its constituents and their relative proportion within the index. Also... Active funds (mutual funds) are ‘actively’ trying to beat the market. Passive funds (index funds) are ‘passively’ trying to mirror the market. Active funds (mutual funds) rely more on security analysis. Passive funds (index funds) rely more on administration. Active funds (mutual funds) have higher costs with the opportunity for higher returns. Passive funds (index funds) have lower costs and accept market returns. Saving now and wanting to invest soon, but don't know where to start? Check out the tutorial and take one of your first steps into funds management with active mutual fund or passive index funds. Jack Bogle on Index Funds, Vanguard, and Investing Advice

51:14
Jack Bogle transformed the investment management industry. Over a career lasting nearly half a century, Bogle was a crusader for individual investors, working to bring the interests of asset managers in line with those of their investment clients. In 1975, Bogle founded the Vanguard Group, structuring the business as a mutual company, meaning that Vanguard is owned by the funds it manages and, as a result, the funds' investors. A year later, Bogle and Vanguard introduced the first ever index mutual fund available to the general public, aiming to track the performance of the broader market while charging the lowest fees possible. At first, many in the investment industry snickered at Vanguard's new index funds, but over time Bogle's idea took hold. While maintaining some of the lowest fees in the business, Vanguard has grown its assets under management from $1.8 billion at its founding to $5.3 trillion as of September 30, 2018, making Vanguard the second largest asset manager in the world. Despite Vanguard's incredible success, Bogle didn't become fantastically rich. Instead, Jack passed on as much savings as possible to Vanguard investors, bringing fees for his funds to razor-thin levels (and dragging the rest of the fund market with him). As a result, Bogle helped all investors get better returns on their retirement savings, drastically reducing underperformance caused by high management fees. As Bogle said in 2012, "My ideas are very simple. In investing, you get what you don't pay for." All investors are indebted to Jack Bogle for his efforts over 40+ years to make the investment industry better serve the interests of individuals. As we remember Bogle's life and his contributions, we hope you'll enjoy this conversation between Bogle and Motley Fool Motley Fool CEO Tom Gardner recorded in 2016. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subscribe to The Motley Fool's YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/TheMotleyFool Or, follow our Google+ page: https://plus.google.com/+MotleyFool/posts Inside The Motley Fool: Check out our Culture Blog! http://culture.fool.com Join our Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/themotleyfool Follow The Motley Fool on Twitter: https://twitter.com/themotleyfool

How to use Excel Index Match (the right way)

11:32
Quickly learn all you need to know about INDEX & MATCH to get a quick start. Complete Excel Dashboard course: https://courses.xelplus.com/p/professional-excel-dashboards Check out my other courses below. Download workbook here: http://www.xelplus.com/excel-index-and-match How to do Index Match in Excel: The basics. Watch this video tutorial to find out how you can use Index & Match for more complex lookup problems. This video shows you how Index Match works with simple and to the point explanation. It first shows you how Index works on it's own and then how Match works and then puts the two Excel functions together. Why index match is better than vlookup & why use index match instead of vlookup? Here are 3 reasons why Excel experts generally substitute VLOOKUP with INDEX and MATCH. 1. Unlike VLOOKUP, which searches only to the right, INDEX and MATCH can look in both directions – left and right. 2. INDEX & MATCH can perform two-way lookups by both looking along the rows and along the columns to find the intersection within a matrix. 3. INDEX & MATCH is less prone to errors. Assume you have a VLOOKUP where the final value you want returned is in column N. Your lookup value is in column A. You need to highlight the entire A to N range and then provide your index number to be 14. If you happen to delete any of the in-between columns, you would have to update that index number. You don’t need to worry about this when you use INDEX & MATCH. All in all, INDEX and MATCH is more flexible than VLOOKUP. Here are some of the reasons why Excel experts generally substitute VLOOKUP with INDEX and MATCH. Note: Index match is not case sensitive Index explained: The first argument of INDEX is to give it an array. This array (range) should include your answer. You then need to specify how many rows to go down and how many columns to move to find the correct value. You cannot move outside the INDEX range. The syntax of INDEX is: • The range where the return value resides. • Number of rows to move down (the row index) • Number of columns to move to the right (the column Index). This argument is optional. If you only have one column, you can leave the column argument empty, otherwise, you need to specify the number of columns to move over, in the range. The MATCH function’s syntax is as follows: • Like VLOOKUP, Match needs a lookup (target) value. The user can reference a cell or directly type the value into the formula. • Lookup_array: The “list” (range) where the return values are located. • Match_type: 0 for an “exact” match. Index MATCH used together: When INDEX and MATCH are used together, the MATCH function finds the look up value’s row / column index and then hands this value off to the INDEX function to get the lookup value. ★ My Online Excel Courses ► https://courses.xelplus.com/ ✉ Subscribe & get my TOP 10 Excel formulas e-book for free https://www.xelplus.com/free-ebook/ EXCEL RESOURCES I Recommend: https://www.xelplus.com/resources/ Get Office 365: https://microsoft.msafflnk.net/15OEg Microsoft Surface: https://microsoft.msafflnk.net/c/1327040/451518/7593 GEAR Camera: https://amzn.to/2FLiFho Screen recorder: http://techsmith.pxf.io/c/1252781/347799/5161 Microphone: https://amzn.to/2DVKstA Lights: http://amzn.to/2eJKg1U More resources on my Amazon page: https://www.amazon.com/shop/leilagharani Note: This description contains affiliate links, which means at no additional cost to you, we will receive a small commission if you make a purchase using the links. SBI Share Price - Buy Sell or Hold (Hindi)

22:13
SBI Share Price touched its 52 weeks high recently. Normally, retail investors buy a share after the rally is over. We discussed SBI Share Price in Stock Talk episode no 25 and the stock followed or respected the technical analysis. In today's follow up video, we will discuss whether you should buy-sell or hold the SBI stock. On price action, the SBI share retraced from its multi-year resistance. It is currently trading in a channel. The gap filling is also pending at the lower levels. On the daily chart, the stock has formed a bearish divergence. In a nutshell, the price action is completely bearish. On Fibonacci retracement, the stock normally retraces from a 78.6% level i.e. level of 281. If you have taken positional trade the SBI Share Price analysis suggests that profit should be booked if the stock breaks the 20-period EMA of 341. The data points suggest that there was delivery based selling in the stock and currently it is under the distribution phase. The option chain analysis is also bearish the shorts on the put side are closing their positions and fresh short positions are created on the call side taking advantage of bullish sentiments of retail investors. The stock has a strong positive correlation with Nifty movement and over the Nifty PSU bank indices is underperforming and it is very difficult for any stock to go against the trend. The private sector continued to maintained a little momentum in march albeit, at a slower pace than the previous month driven by improved operating performances in the agriculture, industry, services, wholesale and retail sectors in the same month. Findings in a new survey by Stanbic Bank and IHS Markit shows that Purchasing Managers Index registered 53.5 percent compared to 50.9 the previous month. Stanbic bank officials suggest that this is a positive economic indicator, perhaps signaling an improvement in the business environment for the private sector.
