Two Questions Product Managers Should Ask Every Day

04:13
There are two simple questions that Product Managers need to ask every day in order to be dramatically more effective. By integrating the questions “Why?” and “So What?” in to their daily work, any product manager can improve their effectiveness. Why? Asking why is one of the most fundamental things you can do as a Product Manager. Beyond the first ask, you should get underneath the initial answer, dig deeper in to some motivations and meanings by asking why several times. So What? This is a question that Product Managers should ask about the information they receive, be it from market research or another source to give any data appropriate context. Furthermore Product Managers should ask themselves “So what?” as a self-check. Connect the dots with regard to whatever you are proposing, and the bottom line of the company; especially when you are speaking with executives. Keep these simple questions in mind every day and you will grow as a product manager right away. How To Interview Product Managers | Interview with Jeana Alayaay

22:04
Last week, we dug into the various product manager personas, and how to go about sourcing candidates. If you missed the episode, you can check it out here: https://youtu.be/QVcsOh0Yfbs. This week, we’re going to talk about another critical step when it comes to hiring product managers: interviewing. Unlike interviewing engineers and designers, where you can test their ability to code and design and their responses provide tangible results, it’s harder to formulate questions related to one’s skill and abilities as a product manager that will produce concrete responses. Let’s face it—product management is more nuanced because it often requires people to have experience analyzing data and making decisions related to the goals of the business, in addition to some technical skills. Exposing the spectrum and depth of these capabilities can make interviewing product managers a challenge. For example, it maybe easy to evaluate if someone can organize a backlog of user stories, but harder to evaluate whether they are really capable of creating and prioritizing a product roadmap that balances out various business goals and milestones to an acceptable level of quality and depth for your team. Plus a product team usually has one product manager who interfaces with many engineers and designers, so hiring the first product manager who is going to gel with all those people puts them under a lot of scrutiny. To handle all these challenges, many companies end up crafting their interview process to resemble a standardized test that candidates end up studying for, rather than demonstrating key skills that they will be using to support the team and product. It’s no wonder some of the best candidates fall through, and companies feel stuck with a product manager who underperforms. This episode is a must watch if you’re a hiring manager who is concerned about losing a talented product manager, or you’re a product manager who is trying to assess a company’s interviewing process. In this episode, we’ll share some best practices around interviewing and coming up with objective criteria to use when screening candidates. Jeana Alayaay, Director of Internal Products and Services at Pivotal, is back to help us out. As you watch today’s episode, you’ll learn the following: - Why there is such a thing as being a bad interviewer - How to prepare the people who will be interviewing candidates - How to expose skill sets during the interview - How to regroup after the interview - Why candidates that don’t meet a checklist are sometimes still hired - How to set expectations with candidates when your company is going through a period of change - How expectations and the role are different when you are the first product manager on a team -- Build is produced as a partnership between Femgineer ((http://femgineer.com/) and Pivotal Tracker (http://www.pivotaltracker.com/). San Francisco video production by StartMotionMEDIA (http://www.startmotionmedia.com/design/).

In this talk Priyanka Kumar, Product Manager at Salesforce, talked about how to prepare for PM interviews, what top companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft really look for, and how to tackle the toughest problems. She discussed how the ambiguously-named "PM" (product manager / program manager) role varies across companies, what experience you need, how to make your existing experience translate and what a great Product Manager resume and cover letter look like. She also talked about how to master the PM interview questions (estimation questions, behavioral questions, case questions, product questions, technical questions, and the super important "pitch"). With 10 years of Product Management experience, Priyanka Kumar is currently leading a product team at Salesforce. In addition to working at salesforce, Priyanka is also an investor and mentor and an MBA graduate. 👉 Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/2xMQLbS 🕊️ Follow us on Twitter: http://bit.ly/2xAQklN 💙 Like us on Facebook for free event tickets: http://bit.ly/2xPfjkh 📷 Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram: http://bit.ly/2eHmfJp Get the presentation slides here: http://bit.ly/2fr7vyl Find out more about us: http://bit.ly/2ysWrIq 💻 ABOUT US: We host product management, data and coding events every week in Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Orange County and New York. What I Learned in 10+ Years at Amazon as Head of Product

That doesn't change if you've been a PM for one day or ten years. This session focused on the lessons Neha Monga, Head of Product for global marketplace pricing at Amazon, has learned from launching products over her 10+ years long career as a product manager. Key Takeaways: 1. Launch a lot - get better at product launches by doing it often and developing pattern matching. 2. Short term vs. long term - have an idea of what the North Star looks like, but launch intermediate stages that create value for customers and still allows you to validate hypotheses. 3. One-way door vs. two-way door - maximize your optionality. Some launches are a one way door and can never be reversed. Others are two-way doors. Try to create more two-way doors. 4. Have a plan - pivot, double down, abandon. Know what you are looking for from the launch - what decisions and what are the next steps. 5. What are you doing to make the launch a success - releasing a product isn’t good enough. What are you trying to do to actually get - adoption, awareness? Have a strong GTM plan. Neha Monga is currently Head of Product for global marketplace pricing at Amazon. Prior to Amazon, she held multiple product positions at Expedia, Microsoft and Zynga. Outside of work, she loves to travel (6 continents and 34 countries so far) and play squash.
