Singapore Sling - How to Make the Classic Tiki Drink & the History Behind It (Smuggler's Cove)

08:43
How to make the Singapore Sling, the classic cocktail made with Gin, Cherry Liqueur, Benedictine, Simple Syrup, Lemon Juice, Soda Water, Aromatic Bitters, Orange Bitters and, optionally, a lemon wheel, mint and a Maraschino Cherry for garnish. This drink was adopted as a Tiki standard and my favorite recipe comes from the handbook for the recently tikified, Smuggler’s Cove. The most popular rumor about this drink was that it was created in 1915 by Ngiam Tong Boon at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore. This creation was also supposed to be made with pineapple juice. However, most of this story was embellished or outright invented by the Raffles Hotel manager from the 1970’s. The only part of the story that was confirmable was that Ngiam worked at Raffles around the turn-of-the-century. The real story of this drink traces back to the 19th century. A Sling is a drink category that, according to David Wondrich began an American creation, but in English hands became more of a punch, which by the mid-to-late 1800’s became the standard definition of a Sling. And a sling English bartenders loved to experiment with throughout the British Empire was the Gin Sling. In Singapore (part of the Straits Settlement at the time), what would later become known at the Straits Sling or—more commonly—the Singapore Sling, was originally just referred to as the Gin Sling. Accounts of Singapore’s Gin Sling started popping up in newspaper accounts in 1897, but it was clear that they had firmly been established as part of the drinking scene by that time. The recipe appeared in print in 1913, 1922 and then in several books throughout the 1930’s. The recipes from the 30’s were all in the same ballpark measurement and ingredient-wise. This was the recipe that Donn Beach put on his menu when he established the first tiki bar, Don the Beachcomber. He had discovered the drink on his travels through the pacific in the mid-1920’s. Even though the drink pre-dates Tiki, it was definitely a staple of a lot of tiki menus. But it makes sense because it was built in the style of a punch, much like a lot of Donn’s original drinks were and just like Donn’s drinks, this one was composed of some exciting and exotic flavors. I R&D’ed this drink pretty extensively. I made half a dozen Singapore Slings from various recipes and compared them side-by-side, including one of the pineapple juice recipes. The hands-down winner was the Smuggler’s Cove recipe, which did not stray too far from the 1930’s recipes. It just added some simple syrup (or in their case rich simple syrup, but 1:1 syrup was perfect for me) to help round off some of the more tart edges of the citrus and it works like a charm. As for the garnish, it’s really up to you. I used a lemon wheel, cherry and mint, but play around with it and figure out what works best for you. It’s not like Three Dots & a Dash (https://youtu.be/A0Jbo2w9EpQ) or the Navy Grog (https://youtu.be/GBfkSqJtpSQ), where the garnish is central to the presentation, but it’s definitely something to play around with to make the drink more exotic. Okole Maluna! Singapore Sling Cocktail | Jamie Oliver

The Singapore Sling cocktail is an absolute classic, invented at Singapore's famous Raffles Hotel in the early 1900's. There are many variations on the recipe, but Jamie's version uses Bombay Sapphire gin, Benedictine herbal liqueur, cherry brandy, triple sec, lime juice, grenadine, fresh pineapple juice and soda water. It's one of our favourites - try it and let us know what you think. Sponsored by Bacardi. Singapore Sling - Godman (Official Video)

04:52
Singapore Sling are an alternative rock band from Reykjavik, Iceland. They are inexplicable and elusive but have noticeable influences from bands like Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Their leader is singer-songwriter-guitarist Henrik Björnsson (who is also part of the Dead Skeletons project). 'Godman' is a classic from Singapore Sling's 2009 album 'Perversity, Desperation And Death', which was released through German label 8mmmusik. Singapore Sling Cocktail Recipe from the Raffles Hotel, Singapore

How to make a Singapore Sling Cocktail recipe: https://cocktailkit.com.au/singapore-sling-cocktail-recipe/ The Singapore Sling is a variation on a classic Gin Sling and was first created around 1915 at the Long Bar in the Raffles Hotel, Singapore. And again, there are many different recipes and opinions on how to make the perfect Singapore Sling but this is one of my favourites. Take note that the recipe calls for cherry brandy - I'd recommend using Cherry Heering (a deep red cherry liqueur, sweet and a more natural cherry taste) or kirsch (a clear coloured cherry brandy, slightly bitter due to the pitts that are also used). Marashino liqueur will impart less cherry flavour, a few herbal notes and some slight bitterness. I mention in the video that the maraschino liqueur was sweeter, when in fact the Cherry Heering is...my bad! Can Cherry Heering, Kirsch and Luxardo Maraschino be substituted for one another? How to Make The Singapore Sling - Best Drink Recipes

01:53
The Singapore Sling is a South-East Asian cocktail. This long drink was developed sometime before 1915. by Ngiam Tong Boon, a Hainanese bartender working at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel Singapore. It was initially called the gin sling, - a sling was originally an American drink composed of spirit and water, sweetened and flavored. D. A. Embury stated in the Fine Art of Mixing Drinks: "Of all the recipes published for [this drink] I have never seen any two that were alike." The Times described the "original recipe" as mixing two measures of gin with one of cherry brandy and one of orange, pineapple and lime juice. An alternative "original recipe" used gin, Cherry Heering, Bénédictine, and fresh pineapple juice, primarily from Sarawak pineapples which enhance the flavor and create a foamy top. The hotel's recipe was recreated based on the memories of former bartenders and written notes that they discovered regarding the original recipe. Recipes published in articles about Raffles Hotel before the 1970s are significantly different from current recipes, and Singapore Slings drunk elsewhere in Singapore differ from the recipe used at Raffles Hotel. By the 1980s, the Singapore Sling was often little more than gin, bottled sweet and sour, and grenadine. With the move towards fresh juices and the re-emergence of quality products like Cherry Heering, the cocktail has begun to resemble its original version.

It’s a, interesting drink because supposedly develop in 1915 in Raffles Hotel in Singapore by a Chinese bartender whose name I can’t pronounce that’s the folklore about it, nobody really knows if that’s true or not or where it came from but it’s basically a base drink with a lot sweeteners on it, rest of the folklore goes to that there’s no two recipes are the same and so at the Kitty came up with the recipe that supposedly the original recipe but it’s tough to say because you go in any bars restaurant and you never gonna be the same to drinks but they will be similar in that Gin, Lime Juice, and cherry brandy which is the three main ingredients, we start with Napoli Grande Glass, which is the closest thing we have to Hurricane glass, we’ll fill that with ice, today will be using the Beefeater Gin, about two and a half ounce of Beefeater five count depending on where you at, Cherry Brandy will be the second ingredient which is even about an ounce and a half with cherry brandy, Cointreau which is an orange base liquor and Benedictine which is an old monk recipe liquor a little less than an ounce, Grenadine just a splash of color couple dashes of bitters and i’m gonna put some fresh squeeze limes in there, it’s about half a lime i’ll cut the line in half cut it in a smaller parts to a takee it easier to squeeze, we’ll finish it of with pineapple juice and i’ll shake the whole thing up, mix it up and then garnish it with the cherry and a large straw and that’s you traditional Singapore Sling, it’s close that I can get to the original recipe.

Thomas Raffles is the man who made this place by developing it as the world's largest trade port and city planning. The Raffles Hotel, Singapore's oldest hotel to honor him. I have not seen it since I am remodeling now. But the hotel bar was able to go. The bartenders' signboard is fascinating, but he says he has developed a famous Singapore cocktail. Even though it is midday, it is full of people just as famous. The fan-shaped ceiling of the hotel bar, which made use of Singaporean atmosphere in the past, is impressive. The tourists from all over the world are drinking the same cocktails. This plain looking cocktail with pineapple in a pink cup is a Singapore sling. Many people look for this cup every day. ""It's a famous cocktail. Actually, I was here about two years ago and I could not get it because I closed the door here. So I came back. I came back for this and I really like it. "" It is fun to look at the manual sling machine which modified the automobile cylinder. Six cups are made at a time. The color is like a nice drink. I am curious about the taste of cocktails. I've only been drinking beer, and this is the first cocktail with a variety of ingredients. If you do not have a guest, you can make a cup of this one separately. ""The recipe I use now was developed a long time ago. The only difference is that today we add the newly developed Grenadines and Vitas. ""Cocktail, a British singer Somerset Moham praised the mystery of the Orient, Singapore Sling. Mix well with various ingredients to create a pinkish cocktail. I ate some of the flavors. I heard that it tasted sweet and refreshing, but I felt a bit rattled. Why did this cocktail become so famous? ""Singapore has been a British colony for many years. According to English customs at the time, women were prohibited from drinking in public places. The young and ambitious bartender at the Raffles Hotel paid attention to this fact. The men who came to the hotel drank gin tonic, but only women could drink fruit juice or tea. So the bartender decided to do something for the women and experimented with making a cocktail based on jean. Benedict dome and grapes, pineapple juice, lime juice and grenadine syrup. That's why the Singapore Sling was born. Paying 27 Singapore dollars allowed us to sip on this wonderful cocktail and throw peanuts on the floor. Generally speaking, I'm a proponent of slow travel. Traveling slow allows you to live more like a local as opposed to racing around a city like a tourist; however, with just 48 hours in Singapore we were forced outside of our comfort zone, for a couple of days, and we ended up loving it. The fast paced (and futuristic) elements of the city were conducive to our mission of seeing as much as we possibly could in such a short period of time. With mere hours as opposed to days to explore the city we set out on foot, by bus and via boat to explore as much of the city as possible. Although we visited many of the main attractions it was our time spent wandering around neighborhoods such as Kampong Glam (the historic Malaysian quarter) that were my favorite moments in the city. As one of the most livable cities in all of Asia it is also one of the most expensive. If in the future I had a high paying position I would consider coming to Singapore as an expat as opposed to being just a tourist. Singapore is impressive by day but really shines at night. Many of the standout landmarks have a completely different look when the sun goes down and the bright lights of the city emerge. When it comes to street food Singapore ranks favorably with Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand. Hawker centres offer up a spread of Asian delights that were heavy on flavor while being light on our wallet. In order to cover as much ground as possible we purchased hop on hop off bus tickets to get around the city. Being able to get on and off whenever we wanted was a real bonus as it helped us preserve our walking legs. Although we saw many of the most popular attractions such as Merlion, Marina Bay and the Fullerton Hotel it was the adventures we had wandering around that formed the greatest impressions of the city. Overall, our time in Singapore was distinctly memorable. Hopefully, we'll have a chance to come back again soon to explore more of this impressive 21st century city state. This is part of our Travel in Singapore series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Singaporean culture, Singaporean arts, Singaporean foods, Singaporean religion and Singaporean people. http://nomadicsamuel.com/video-blog/singapore Proudly presented by: http://nomadicsamuel.com , http://smilingfacestravelphotos.com , http://thatbackpacker.com & http://backpacking-travel-blog.com All photos and video taken by Samuel Jeffery (Nomadic Samuel) and Audrey Bergner (That Backpacker).

Some Facts About LexGo as a Traveler: * When I’m traveling, I love waking up early in the morning to take great shots of an uncrowded city * I prefer to be on my sandals all the time so I so I don’t have to carry socks with me in my luggage * I always bring power extension cords whenever I travel. * I always have problems sticking to my budget when I’m traveling. * The worst thing that happened to me while traveling so far was when I was held by the immigration officers in Paris. I made a mistake in my visa application and I actually overstayed in France. But all is well, they did let me go. And they were very nice to me. They even offered me cookies.

Raffles Singapore Long Bar Singapore Sling by HourPhilippines.com

02:17
Raffles Singapore Long Bar Singapore Sling, The Singapore Sling is a South-East Asian cocktail. This long drink was developed in 1915 by Ngiam Tong Boon, a Hainanese bartender working at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel Singapore. It was initially called the gin sling, - a sling was originally an American drink composed of spirit and water, sweetened and flavoured. The "original recipe" is mixing two measures of gin with one of cherry brandy and one of orange, pineapple and lime juice An alternative "original recipe" used gin, Cherry Heering, Bénédictine, and fresh pineapple juice, primarily from Sarawak pineapples which enhance the flavour and create a foamy top. Most recipes substitute bottled pineapple juice for fresh juice; soda water has to be added for foam. The hotel's recipe was recreated based on the memories of former bartenders and written notes that they discovered regarding the original recipe. One of the scribbled recipes is still on display at the Raffles Hotel Museum. Recipes published in articles about Raffles Hotel before the 1970s are significantly different from current recipes, and Singapore Slings drunk elsewhere in Singapore differ from the recipe used at Raffles Hotel. The current Raffles Hotel recipe is a heavily modified version of the original, most likely changed sometime in the 1970s by Ngiam Tong Boon's nephew. Today, many of the Singapore Slings served at Raffles Hotel have been pre-mixed and are made using an automatic dispenser that combines alcohol and pineapple juice to pre-set volumes. They are then blended instead of shaken to create a foamy top as well as to save time because of the large number of orders. However, it is still possible to request a shaken version from bartenders. By the 1980s, the Singapore Sling was often little more than gin, bottled sweet and sour, and grenadine. With the move towards fresh juices and the re-emergence of quality products like Cherry Heering, the cocktail has begun to resemble its original version Thank you for watching. Singapore Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia

05:27
https://www.expedia.com/Singapore.d180027.Destination-Travel-Guides Small and heavily populated, Singapore is an easy place to explore; nothing in the city is more than an hour from the business district. Thanks to modern construction and outstanding architecture, Singapore is rapidly becoming a powerhouse trade city, but it maintains ties to its Asian roots through traditional temples and many cultural hotspots, like Little India and Kampong Glam. Your Singapore tour must include the Botanical Gardens and Orchid Gardens, both beautiful and notable places to visit. If you’re a fan of exotic animals, stop by the Singapore Zoo and check in with its 300-plus species that take up residence there. You can also take a “bumboat” from Changi Beach to Pulau Ubin, set away from the bustling city, and delight in its quiet mangroves. No Singapore sightseeing is complete without a visit to Marina Bay, a glowing, high-tech vision of the future, or Orchard Road, which boasts enough shopping to keep you occupied for several rainy afternoons. Top 10 ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Movie Locations to Visit in Singapore

09:24
A travel guide to visit the 10 best ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ filming locations in Singapore. Crazy Rich Asians is a love letter to the food, culture and beauty of Singapore and in this video I’ll take you through the top attractions in Singapore that you saw in the movie. We’ll start with Changi Airport, one of the world’s best airports. When they land, Rachel comments that it “looks like an upscale tropical resort.” Changi Airport has a butterfly garden, koi fish ponds, and even a three story slide that you can ride! 2 - Newton Food Centre Their first stop in Singapore. Nick Says: Each of these hawker stalls sells just one dish, and they have been perfecting it for generations. One of the only places in the world where street vendors win Michelen Stars. 3 - Marina Bay Sands Probably the most famous location in the movie. One of the final scenes in the movie is shot on top of the 57th floor bar with the amazing infinity pool in the background. 4- Merlion The Merlion is a mythical creature with a lion's head and the body of a fish that is widely used as a mascot and national personification of Singapore. 1 million people per year visit the merlion. 5 - Singapore Flyer Singapore’s tallest Ferris Wheel, and the 2nd biggest in the world. 6 - Raffles Hotel Where they stayed, which opened in 1887. -- you too can stay here if you have 10,000 SGD per night for a suite. Under renovation until 2019. Sip a Singapore Sling in the bar where the gin-based cocktail. You can tell that Singapore is a foodie country that with 10 food and beverage spaces that represent more than 1,100 seats for just 115 suites, it can claim far more tables than beds 7 - Chinatown Bukit Pasoh Road This picturesque street is lined with preserved Peranakan shophouses. 8 - CHIJMES Across the road from Raffles, it’s a 19th-century gothic chapel turned into a function space is the location for the grand wedding. 9 - Sentosa Island This small island is home to beaches, hotels, spas, and in "Crazy Rich Asians," Nick retreated to his friend Collin’s house on Sentosa, and Rachel’s friend Peik Lin invited her to a spa on Sentosa. 10 - Gardens by the Bay Probably my favorite attraction in Singapore -- the Gardens by the Bay is where the wedding reception was held, in front of the Supertree Grove. Come at 7:45 or 8:45pm for the music and light show on the Supertrees. THE BEST SINGAPORE SLING AT RAFFLES

02:09
Today we decided to visit the legendary raffles and try the historic, Singapore sling. Simply the best Singapore sling I've ever had. And so it should be for $30+ More info on the Raffles Hotel; The year was 1887 when the doors to the Raffles Hotel Singapore first opened. Since then, this luxury five star hotel in Singapore has become an icon that epitomises the romance of the Far East – an intoxicating blend of luxury, history and colonial design. Situated in the heart of the business and civic district, Raffles Singapore is a veritable oasis in the city. Its classic colonial architecture has been perfectly preserved and provides a stark but lively contrast against its modern-skyscraper neighbours. Through the decades, liveried Sikh doormen have welcomed some of the most famous personalities, from writers to celebrities, politicians and members of royalty, such as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. No visit to Singapore is complete without a stay at this iconic all-suite luxury Singapore hotel. Choose to check in to one of the six categories of suites available. Although situated in different parts of the hotel, the view will always be of lush tropical gardens best enjoyed in the comfort of the veranda. Each suite features period furnishings, lofty 14-foot ceilings and modern conveniences expected of a 21st-century hotel. Raffles butlers, legendary for their charming and graceful service are available to fulfil requests both ordinary and extraordinary. From local favourites to English classics and even a North Indian curry buffet, the culinary spread at Raffles Singapore is extensive and enticing. Make a reservation at the 14 restaurants and bars at our hotel, where each offers a unique menu prepared using only the freshest of ingredients. Among the most well-loved include the fine dining establishment Raffles Grill; Long Bar, where the famous Singapore Sling was created; and Writers Bar, a tribute to the novelists and travel writers, who have become part of the hotel’s legend.

Composed of 10 new songs, the album gives people a glimpse of the more than a decade of friendship between the members of the band. Composed of Yael on vocals, Armo on lead guitar, Gosh on bass and TedMark on drums, Sponge Cola considers this album as a celebration of years of blessings. We have been chillin', doing the things we love to do all these years, says Yael. So, looking back, we are not just really blessed, but we are Ultrablessed. According to Yael, the album contains 10 new fun songs, but quickly clarified that, asically, all the tracks in the album are 'fun' songs, but not necessarily happy. Some songs are sad, but they are fun. Yael further explains that the album has that fun vibe, which is a product of the band members' current state of mind. When you are happy, of course, you come up with 'fun' songs, he adds. This album has that vibe in it, so I hope we can share this to everyone. The album's first single Anting-Anting, which also features Gloc-9 and Denise Barbacena, talks about empowerment among victims of bullying. Its music video is set to premiere on MYX in a few days. Ultrablessed also features the band's collaboration with Yeng Constantino - +63. For Yael, Ultrablessed is also special because, like the band's earlier hits, his brother Yani Yuzon worked on the project as producer. Our fans will surely hear the distinct Yani touch, enthuses Yael. We are excited to let the public hear the new works we've done. Ultrablessed CD Track List 1. Hawla 2. Kailangan Kita 3. Singapore Vacation Travel Video Guide

25:34
Travel video about destination Singapore. Singapore is a city of gardens and the heart of South East Asia. Its history began in 1819 with Thomas Stamford Raffles, a young official who worked for the British East India Company. Raffles estimated that the natural harbor was perfect for trading ships, so he bought the land from the Sultan of Johor and founded a trading settlement. As a free port, Singapore attracted trading ships from all over the world and today, 4 million people live here on an area that covers 640 square kilometres. In June each year, there is an exciting boat race in Marina Bay known as the Dragon Boat Race, that features magnificently painted dragon boats with hand-carved heads and tails accompanied by the sound of frenetic drumbeats. Dating back to colonial times, British influence is omnipresent, whether the Cricket Club or the Parliament, traditional English spirit rules despite Singapore's Independence. The World Famous Raffles Hotel is situated in the Colonial District near the Singapore River. In the hotel's Ashanti Bar, it was customary to throw expired peanut shells directly onto the floor and at the same time, reverently sip a Singapore Sling, the national drink. The Singapore Zoo is one of the finest in the world in which the animals can roam freely, their territory being surrounded by a landscaped ditch. Approximately 2,800 animals live in the spacious enclosures and even those from the world's coldest regions can be observed both below and above water, thanks to cleverly designed viewing areas. A complete mix of ethnic cultures, there's Chinatown, Little India and the Arab Street Quarter in which there are mosques, women wear burqas and there is all the hustle and bustle of a bazaar. Singapore is an exotic city of skyscrapers, a cultural melting pot and the exciting gateway to South East Asia! -------------- Watch more travel videos ► https://goo.gl/MXPgSs Join us. Singapore Sling - Astronaut - Psych Fuck LP

02:36
Singapore Sling was born out of love and hate. Love for rock’n’roll and hatred for the majority of music that was around at the time. It was formed by Henrik Bjornsson back in 2000 in the beauty and darkness of Reykjavik, Iceland. Today Singapore Sling are renowned as one of the founding figures in the ballooning psych scene, where they keep things grounded with their garage-heavy, blues-tinged, whisky-breathed, psych fuck rock‘n’roll. Psych Fuck is their seventh album, due for release on vinyl, CD and digital November 1st. Available from fuzzclub.com : http://fuzzclub.com/collections/fuzz-club-releases/products/singapore-sling-psych-fuck FUZZ CLUB RECORDS Fuzz Club Records is an independent label, online store and production company that focuses on raw, experimental rock and roll, influenced by psychedelia, shoegaze, noise, garage, blues, folk and experimentation. Established in rural Norway during the 24 hour darkness of the Arctic winter, Fuzz Club entered the scene in 2012 with their compilation The Reverb Conspiracy – made in collaboration with Austin Psych Fest – a now annual release capturing the essence of the underground scene as it is today. Today Fuzz Club has around 20 artists and over 40 releases featuring names like Anton Newcombe, Goat, Alan Vega, The Black Angels, Dead Skeletons, A Place to Bury Strangers and The Underground Youth.

Fan video. From the album Singapore Sling Must Be Destroyed (2010) on Outlier Records. Footage from the film Singapore Sling (1990) directed by Nikos Nikolaidis. Singapore Sling hail from Reykjavík, Iceland and have released 5 studio albums. They are named after the film mentioned above, not the cocktail. Their Neo-Psychedelia sound has often been compared by the media to acts such as The Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Raveonettes, BRMC and Serena Maneesh, although the band's tongue-in-cheek frontman Henrik Bjornsson defines it as "a cross between Simon and Garfunkel"
